People always ask “But how do you do it?” And honestly it’s not as simple as it may seem. To someone on the outside of the woodburning world, it may look easy- just plug in the burner and make some designs on the wood, right?
 Hah! No. There’s so much more to it than that. An entire WORLD of woodburning exists and there is no 1-size-fits-all answer for how people burn. Everyone burns differently with their own techniques, skills, preferences, etc. I burn a certain way- with a certain favorite nib, with favorite techniques, favorite styles- and my way is different than the next person’s way, which is different from the next person’s way, etc. Tune in to my free LIVE Burn-Along session to see exactly HOW I burn- HOW I use my nibs, HOW I add color, HOW I make decisions on composition design and where to put what. I’ll be working on a springtime floral design on a piece of red cedar. You’re guaranteed to walk away with some gold nuggets, I’m sure.

I think maple may have taken the #1 spot on my list of favourite woods to burn, I love how dark and black it burns, it’s such a bold contrast from the white wood, and so much flexibility with shading. I haven’t even highlighted yet and I’m already ecstatic with how it looks. This giant piece is only about 1/4 of the way done, still a ways to go yet 😅 . Here’s a pro tip for wood burning ⬇️ Even if an area of your piece is in complete shadow, adding texture in your burn will really add dimension and life to the art! Here, in my reference photo, this side of the dog’s face was in complete black shadow. I could have gone in with my flat shader and burned the area black and smooth. But using my knowledge of fur direction, I was able to add in texture while burning dark. From a distance, it matches the reference photo, but when you are up close, the dimension of the dog comes to life and the shadows don’t fall flat!
