EWA Russell viper snake was found inside a residential house in Sundara nagar, Thanjavur Medical College Road. When it was examined in our office, it was confirmed to be pregnant. The next morning, the snake gave birth to 22 young ones, and all of them are in good health. NATubing and administering an antibiotic injection to one of India’s deadliest snakes! Peanut, my Russell’s viper, went off feed and I couldn’t figure out why. After giving her awhile to just see if she would take again, I decided to tube her and found that she managed to bite through the skin on her bottom jaw with both fangs several times and it caused a little bit of scale rot around the puncture wounds.
Every 3-4 days I take her out to tube her and administer an IM injection. I always tell people who are looking to get into venomous snakes that you have to be able to work with them hands on without fear because you never know what situations may occur. Now, this does not mean go and free handle things. It means using the appropriate tools for health exams, handling, etc.
One mistake while doing this and it’s game over. The blue insularis humbled me enough to never move too quickly.

SEThe snake you see in this video is the Russell’s viper, in Kannada we call it as “Kolakku mandala” and they are nocturnal snakes. Russell’s viper is identified by its triangular distinct head, a yellowish-brown body with a pattern of three rows of large, oval-shaped dark spots running along its back. A Russell’s viper is often confused with an Indian rock python. They primarily sense their prey through a combination of excellent smell, using their forked tongue to pick up scent molecules. Although they lack the specialized ‘pit organs’ found in some other viper species, they can still detect heat from their prey through sensitive nerve endings in the area between their nostrils and eyes.
