_QAs a kid I often got asked
where my last name came from.
Why it sounded different.
How to pronounce it.
A lot of times I wasn’t even sure how to say it myself.
I think because it never fully felt like mine.
Shortly before my dad passed away,
I learned about the mistake.
I understood why he didn’t correct it.
And why he never told me.
That understanding sent me on a search
talking to family, reading work by Indigenous writers. And eventually I found the root.
Quispe.
So I carry the name forward not to undo what he did,
but to give it back to him, and to myself.

De niño muchas veces me preguntaban
de venía mi apellido.
Por qué sonaba diferente.
Cómo se pronunciaba.
Muchas veces ni yo mismo estaba seguro
de cómo decirlo. Creo que porque nunca se sentía completamente mío.
Poco antes de que mi papá falleciera,
supe del error. Entendí por qué no lo corrigió.
Y porque nunca me lo dijo.
Ese entendimiento me llevó a buscar hablar con mi familia, leer el trabajo de escritores indígenas.
Y eventualmente encontré la raíz.
Quispe.
Así que llevo ese nombre hacia adelante
no para deshacer lo que él hizo,
sino para devolvérselo a él, y a mí.
