BRThis is a message for all the writers out there who are in the query trenches or struggling to navigate the path to publication, feeling like it’ll never happen for them. THE FOLLOWERS was actually the THIRD full-length novel manuscript I had written. I had two “practice” manuscripts before it that I desperately wanted to get published but just didn’t work out. This book is the one the eventually landed me my awesome agent—but it wasn’t the one that got me a publishing deal. I had to write an entirely new book for that to happen (IMPOSTER, which came out last year) and then we pitched this one as the second in a two-book deal. Meanwhile I co-wrote an entire manuscript in a different genre that didn’t sell…but it connected us with an editor who eventually gave us a publishing deal for two books (THE BEACH TRAP and THE COMEBACK SUMMER) which led to another two-book deal after that (UNTIL NEXT SUMMER coming summer 2024 and another untitled book). So the point is that it’s easy to look at an author online and think “Wow, she’s published four books!” but you don’t see the three manuscripts still in the drawer that may never see the light of day, the 100+ rejections, and all the frustration and tears that led to this. This is my message to you to keep going, keep writing and revising and learning and growing as a writer. Keep putting yourself out there and trying new things until you find something that works. And believe me, life isn’t magically better once you get the book deal—you just have a whole new set of concerns and challenges.
Your writing matters, your voice matters, your story matters. Don’t give up. 💖
