Do THIS on race day ⬇️ Racing is a time to show off your hard work in training but most people dread racing or aren’t able to get into the right mindset. Here are some mental tips to help you go out and perform well when it counts 1️⃣ Nerves are good Nerves mean you care. Use the adrenaline from the nerves to go out and maximize your performance. Remember EVERYONE else is nervous so don’t think it’s only you. Take a breath in these moments and remind yourself why you are doing it 2️⃣ You have nothing to lose Go into races with no expectations. Just go out, compete, run hard, and leave it all out there. The results will take care of themselves. This ‘nothing to lose’ mindset was one of the main reasons I was able to continually drop time in college (It’s good to still have goals and a race plan just don’t fixate too much on that during race) 3️⃣ Be confident You’ve put in the training and done the hard work, now is the fun part. You get to show that off. Be confident you have the ability to go out and run that goal time. Believing in yourself to go do it is the first step. Keeping a training log and looking back through all the training you’ve done is a great way to build confidence on race day 4️⃣ Mindset is everything Nerves and excitement are the same feeling. You have to trick your brain into feeling excited. Your mind is the only thing holding you back from going out and running your best. Your body is trained and ready. This is when positive self talk mantras come in handy (refer to my “5 Things To Tell Yourself On the Starting Line” video) Remember, the best races come when you relax and let if flow. Can you loose the 1500m in the 1st 10m of the race…👇 The start isn’t about being the fastest. It’s about being in control. Here’s what actually matters 👇 1️⃣ Positioning over panic You don’t need the lead — but you do need a good spot. Avoid getting boxed in, but don’t waste energy fighting for first. 2️⃣ Controlled acceleration Build into your pace. Too fast early = you pay for it later. Smooth is fast. 3️⃣ Stay relaxed under pressure Everyone surges at the start. The best runners stay calm, breathe, and settle into rhythm. The goal isn’t to win the first 50 meters. It’s to set up the entire race. Run smart early… and you’ll finish strong when it matters. Run like a girl! 1) When it comes to technique, less is more. Try not to overload yourself with information on ways to run faster. Instead find what has worked for you and improve on that specifically. Ive had a bad habit of completely rearranging my technique thinking thats what I needed to improve or get faster. If you have to focus on your form, try working on general mechanics like landing under your COM and having a powerful arm swing. 2) Dont beat yourself up after losing a race. Take your time to recollect your thoughts but dont sit and wallow in it (as my dad would say, "flush it"). If it's possible analyze where your weak point in the race was. Was it your race model? Warm up? Not enough energy in the tank? Were you feeling 100% before the race even started? Figure this out and get back to the drawing board. 3) Dont focus on trying to run a specific time. Once you start running for time you tend to overdo it and forget things like your race model, basic mechanics, or relaxation. EVERY runner needs to hear this before their next race… . . . Before every 200m/400m race, I used to focus on the start. I wanted to chase and beat whoever was in front of me. I was there to RACE👀 But guess what… truth is, the race is won when everyone else hits the wall. I figured that out and I started to understand my goal wasn’t to just start fast and hold on as long as possible. My goal was to close like a beast🔥 How should you put this into practice? By doing it in all your training sessions. Don’t hold anything back. Don’t save energy. Attack those big workouts with intensity and fire. And when you hit the last rep, or more specifically, the last 50m of the last rep, give it your all AND more. When you do this over and over again, it will begin to show in the races. So my tip of the day for you? Start like an animal, finish like a beast🫵🏾 #tracknation #trackandfield #trackandfieldlife #runningtips #speedwork #d1athlete #sprinting #running #sprintdrills #400m #200meters #collegeathletes

Most kids aren’t “slow.” They’ve just never been taught how to sprint correctly. Speed isn’t about running more or trying harder. It’s mechanics. It’s posture. It’s learning how to apply force the right way. When sprint mechanics improve, speed improves — and athletes move better, feel more confident, and perform at a higher level. That’s what real speed training looks like. Follow for elite sprint mechanics and speed development. #speedtraining

100M RACE MODEL The 100m isn’t just about who’s the fastest… it’s about who distributes their energy the best and executes their race model under pressure. The difference between winning and losing at the highest level is often hundredths of a second. That margin comes down to how well an athlete manages each phase of the race. ⚡ Drive Phase — patience and projection⚡ Transition — building rhythm without forcing it⚡ Max Velocity — upright posture, relaxation, efficiency⚡ Speed Maintenance — holding positions while others tighten up The athletes who win consistently aren’t just fast… they understand how to apply their speed across the entire race. Energy distribution + technical execution = elite performance. Don’t just run the race.Execute the model.

Here are simple ways you can make your race day feel easier! 1.) Do not think about any bad reps that you might’ve had at practice the day before your race. You must forget the negative things that happened. If you focus more on the negative thing then you well have a negative outcome on race day! You must remind yourself one bad practice doesn’t define you! 2.) Do not lock in too early! Save your energy for locking in when it is time to warm up for your race. This will eliminate the pressure you try to put on yourself to execute. You practice your event enough times to feel confident to perform so don’t stress yourself out! 3.) Trust the hard work you put in. If you work your butt off at practice then it will show on the track. Once you know it will show then you will execute all that you practiced without thinking twice! If this helped you follow for more speed training videos so you can get faster!

3 Keys To A Faster Start ⤵️⤵️ But first be sure you’re following me @brendanthompsn for sprint tips and videos! # 1 ) Be patient The top thing hurting your starts is being overly urgent and rushing out of the blocks Really fast steps tend to be short, with little power, and lead to standing up too soon # 2 ) Strike down and push back Striking out in front will braking forces that slow you down substantially and lead you to rising up too soon This shuts down the acceleration phase too soon and leads to athletes working too hard to achieve top speed later # 3 ) Project your body FORWARD and UP Too many athletes push straight out, causing them to step out in front of themselves (# 2) and stand up too soon (# 1) The other outcome is the athlete feels like they are about to fall on their face, putting them into survival mode rather than allowing them to put together a meaningful start If you found these tips helpful and want to the link to my speed program, follow these 2 steps: 👣 Follow me @brendanthompsn 💬 Comment “Program” I’ll send you the link to sign up ⚡️ #speed #speedtraining #speedtips #sprint #fast #training #power #track #athlete #program
