IR Laser Pointer: here’s a strange find- a laser pointer that emits a beam in the infrared wavelength of 810 nm, which is invisible to human vision. We can see the effect of the IR beam on a radiometer as compared to an equal low wattage green laser beam of 532 nm. The IR beam seems to heat up the panel more effectively. What is the use of an invisible laser pointer? My guess is that it may have some use when wearing night vision goggles. Since IR is invisible, great care should be taken with this device. ➡️ Follow the link from my profile for info on where to obtain many of the amazing items featured here on @physicsfun. #532nm #810nm #radiometer #crookesradiometer #infrared

Look at this thing: it’s eating light! 💡 Have you ever wondered if you could actually touch light? Not just feel the warmth on your skin, but really - could a beam of light push something? In this video, someone shines a laser at a little spinner inside a glass bulb, and it starts spinning like crazy. It’s fantastic, isn’t it? It looks like the photons are bombarding the vanes like tiny little soccer balls. But nature is playing a much trickier game with us here. What’s the catch? If we pumped absolutely every bit of air out of that bulb, the spinner would hardly budge (light pressure is a real thing, but it’s awfully weak!). The secret is that there’s still a little bit of gas left inside. Picture this: the vanes are black on one side and shiny on the other. When you shine that laser, the black side says, “Oh, energy!” and greedily soaks it up, getting hot. The shiny side just kicks the light back and stays cool. Now, here’s the kicker: The air molecules inside that bulb are flying all over the place like mad. When a molecule crashes into the cool, shiny side, it bounces off at its normal speed. But when it hits that hot, black side… WHAM! It gets a massive kick of heat and flies away much faster than it arrived. It’s like throwing a tennis ball at a wall: from a normal wall, it just bounces back. But if you throw it at a wall that suddenly turns into a moving catapult, the ball flies off so hard that it pushes the wall itself backward. The world is full of these «invisible» events. What looks like a simple push from a beam of light is actually a complex dance of molecules and energy exchange at the boundary of light and shadow. We call it a «Crookes Radiometer,» but I prefer to call it a reminder that even in a seemingly empty jar, there’s an awful lot of interesting stuff going on if you know how to look. Physics isn’t about formulas in a textbook. It’s the sheer pleasure of finding out how the stage is set! 🚀 #physics #science #feynman #light #radiometer

The Crookes radiometer and 1 W violet laser. The Crookes radiometer is used to demonstrate the rotation of a lightweight propeller placed inside a glass bulb with rarefied air, driven by thermal radiation. The blades of the device spin when illuminated because their dark surface absorbs considerably more heat rays than the shiny one, causing it to heat up more. Gas molecules in the vessel rebound from the dark surface with greater velocity than from the cooler, shiny surface. This generates a rotational force that makes the mill turn so that the dark side of the blades moves away from the incident rays. This effect was discovered, and the radiometer was invented in 1874 by the British physicist and chemist William Crookes. During an experiment that required highly accurate weighing of substances, he observed that sunlight affected the scale readings in a partially evacuated chamber. While studying this phenomenon, he created the device that bears his name. Manufactured at the Elektrodelo factory in Leningrad, USSR, in 1969. #vintagetech #laserdiode #bluelaser #radiometer #physics

A video installation employing the radiometer devised in 1870 by British physicist Sir William Crookes.
A radiometer is a scientific instrument that converts light energy into kinetic energy; in this work, it spins under the illumination of a projector. The projected pixels appear to animate as if synchronized with the radiometer’s shadows and movements. As viewers move through the space, they trace the interlocking gears between “phenomenon” (light and shadow) and “image” (the projected world). Their own silhouettes, caught by the projector’s beam, are likewise cast into the realm of the image—bridging the two sides of the screen into a single, circulating landscape. The work draws inspiration from early animation devices such as the magic lantern and the zoetrope, which employ optical projection and mechanical motion. Created for the solo exhibition Shikakui Keshiki (“A View in the Square”), and exhibited at Cultural Forum Kasugai and Funabashi Andersen Park Children’s Museum.
