HIRaffaello Sanzio was born on April 6th in 1483 in Urbino, Italy, was a master painter and architect of the High Renaissance, celebrated for his balanced compositions, graceful figures, and serene expressions. He also died on April 6th at just 37.
Orphaned at a young age, Raphael trained under master Pietro Perugino before moving to Florence, where he absorbed the influence of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. His art reflects harmony, human emotion, and clarity, securing his legacy as one of the most admired artists in Western history.
One of Raphael’s most intimate and groundbreaking works was his portrait of Pope Julius II, painted in 1511. Unlike the regal, stiff portrayals typical of papal portraiture, Raphael depicted Julius seated in quiet contemplation, with a tired expression, a white mourning beard, and a green backdrop. This psychological depth shocked viewers.
Renaissance biographer Giorgio Vasari said the portrait was “so true and lifelike it inspired fear, as if it were the living man himself.” Hung for years in Santa Maria del Popolo, the painting blurred the line between power and humanity, capturing a vulnerable pope during a tumultuous time.
Art during the Renaissance was overwhelmingly commissioned by the wealthy and powerful—popes, princes, and elites—who used it to convey status and immortality. Much of the era’s most iconic art was created for private chapels, palaces, and elite institutions, inaccessible to most people at the time.
