it’s hard fkn work, but we’re in this together 🤍 I didn’t know a thing about reactivity until I got Winnie. I remember learning the term after googling what was what going on and how I could “fix” the behaviours we were experiencing. Since that day, we’ve been on one hell of of journey and have learnt SO much together. We’ve had huge wins, huge setbacks, months of consistency with barely noticeable progress, breakdowns, sessions with trainers, trying all types of approaches to find what would works for us. Now? All that hard work has led us to a much happier, more confident and resilient dog. We still have our bad moments or days, but through a lot of trial and error, we have found what works for us. We have figured out the ways to best manage Winnie and her emotions to allow us to enjoy our lives together. And that was the goal all along. Don’t give up on your reactive dog. (You can find our reactivity journey in our Reactivity DOGS and Reactivity PPL highlights) #reactivedog #reactivitytraining #reactivedogs #dogtraining #dogreactivitytraining

Why should your behavioral dog see a veterinary behaviorist? 1. A veterinary behaviorist can diagnose whether the puppy’s behavior is rooted in a medical, neurological, or behavioral issue, while board-and-train programs typically only address training techniques. 2. Veterinary behaviorists are licensed veterinarians with advanced training, so they can prescribe medications if needed to support behavior modification—trainers cannot. 3. Behaviorists design individualized, science-based treatment plans that address the underlying cause of the behavior rather than just suppressing symptoms. 4. Board-and-train facilities vary widely in quality and oversight, and some use methods that may worsen fear, anxiety, or aggression in puppies with behavioral disorders. 5. Working with a veterinary behaviorist gives owners long-term support, education, and monitoring, ensuring the puppy’s progress is humane, safe, and effective. #dogbehavior #reactivedog #reactivedogs #dogtrainingtips

It be like that sometimes though 😂 sorry Nikki! 👹 _ People used to stop coming over when they found out I rescued Zeus **cough cough** to some of my awesome family members and a select few my moms friends 🫢 It’s funny to me because it’s not Zeus they have to worry about! Nikki is actually the problem doggo 😂 _ We have two little dogs (Nikki and Tod) who are both people and dog reactive. It has not been an easy journey to say the least. I am just trying to make light of a situation that hasn’t been easy for us. Nikki isn’t also full Chihuahua because I know people will ask. All the dogs DNA markup is listed on my highlights). I try to always show the best side of Nikki on my stories but sometimes she can be a little ✨spicy✨ What I find the best thing to do in a situation like this is to add a little humor to it personally. Life can’t always be too serious because what’s the fun in that? _ Lets talk about dog reactivity for a second. Reactivity is when your dog over reacts to things in their environment. Having a reactive dog (especially two) can be challenging in your daily life. It makes it hard to go out on walks, to the park, or being in public places. Whenever people do come over they need to always let us know ahead of time so the little dogs can be put in their own room upstairs. One thing that I’ve learned when dealing with reactive dogs is “your dog isn’t giving you a hard time, your dog is having a hard time.” _ Do you have a reactive dog? What’s something you learned while going through this journey with them? _ #dailybarker #dogdaily #chiweeniesofinstagram #rescuedog #thegoodestboy #dogs #animalsinfluence #dogsofinstagram #dogs #rescuedogs #reactivedog #reactivedogsofinstagram #reactivedogs #doggosbeingdoggos #doggosdoingthings #doggos _ Follow: @handsome.zeus⚡️for your daily dose of handsome #handsomezeus

Wagging Tail Doesn’t Mean Friendly ??? Although friendly dogs will wag their tails, we must also remember that dogs showing aggression can also wag their tails, nervous dogs will also wag their tails. Why ??? It’s because a tail wagging is just excitement/adrenaline going through the body, the position of the tail, the body, the ears, the eyes it all matters when reading a dog. Assuming a tail wagging is enough as a stand alone for deciding if a dog is friendly or not has caused a great many people to get bitten. #dogtrainingadvice #dogs #caucasianshepherd #dogsofinsta #bigdogs #reactivedogs #viral

Is it possible to train a dog to be less reactive? It is! If your dog is barking and lunging at other dogs or people, it’s never too late to start training and make life easier for both of you. We’d recommend: ☝️Practicing basic training – to build trust, master a marker word like ‘yes’ or ‘good’ and work on calm behaviours throughout the day. ✌️Keeping your dog away from triggers – it’s not always possible to predict but you can try to avoid stressful situations and stop your dog from practising reactive behaviour. 🤟Teach alternative behaviours – teaching them to sit or turn and walk away when confronted with a stressful situation will help you to walk your dog with confidence. #woodgreen #woodgreenpetscharity #woodgreendogs #reactivedogs #dogadvice #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #dogreactivity #dogproblems #dogtips #rescuedogs #rescuedogsofinstagram #reactivedog #reactive

Saying no to “dog people” vs actual dog people in public! Or people that are so excited about the existence of dogs that they forget to ask the owner if they can interact and are maybe less educated on how to approach dogs vs people who love dogs but remember that is always important to be polite and ask first and perhaps know more about dog behavior. I’m often just the last person 😂 Or I’ll stop and compliment from a distance! I used to feel SO bad telling people no when they wanted to interact with my dog. So many people had pretty ugly reactions to being told no or pretty sad reactions. With lots of practice and realizing how important it was for me to advocate for my dog, I got better! Even the friendliest of dogs benefit from you saying “no”. When you say no to people, just think of yourself as free exposure therapy for people with rejection sensitivity! It’s good for them too! You don’t owe anyone an explanation for why they can’t pet your dog. Your dog is not public property! And I know there’s a lot of debate on saying “he’s not friendly” right now, but I do find it is sometimes easier than just saying “No” to people. And I promise your dog is not depressed because you’re not letting strangers touch them. It’s ok to allow interactions if the context is right and it’s something your dog truly enjoys, but it’s also important for your dog to have some boundaries too. Also, did you notice I decided not to gate keep love on this post 👀😂 . . . #dogreactivity #dogtraining #balanceddogtraining #corgitraining #reactivedogs

For the longest time, I felt like I was fighting a losing battle when it came to working through Winnie’s reactivity. Progress was slow and it felt like every time we would getting somewhere, the reckless actions of others (off leash, out of control dogs) would destroy everything we worked so hard for. But one look at her, and I knew I had to keep pushing. With time, our hard work paid off. I learnt how to read and understand her body language. I started viewing reactions as information, instead of failures. I began to recognise which situations needed management, and which were training opportunities. Our relationship become stronger, and reactions became few and far in between. Let this be your reminder not to give up on your dog. I know it’s not easy - it’s emotionally draining, stressful, frustrating, and isolating. Trust me, I know. Whether you’re at the beginning, or you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, comment below if you’re a reactive dog owner and help show others that they are anything but alone ❤️  #reactivedog #dogreactivitytraining #dogtraining #dogreactivity #leashreactivity #reactivedogs
