it’s hard fkn work, but we’re in this together 🤍 I didn’t know a thing about reactivity until I got Winnie. I remember learning the term after googling what was what going on and how I could “fix” the behaviours we were experiencing. Since that day, we’ve been on one hell of of journey and have learnt SO much together. We’ve had huge wins, huge setbacks, months of consistency with barely noticeable progress, breakdowns, sessions with trainers, trying all types of approaches to find what would works for us. Now? All that hard work has led us to a much happier, more confident and resilient dog. We still have our bad moments or days, but through a lot of trial and error, we have found what works for us. We have figured out the ways to best manage Winnie and her emotions to allow us to enjoy our lives together. And that was the goal all along. Don’t give up on your reactive dog. At Ultimutt we believe in progress over perfection. Grooming isn’t just one appointment, it’s a lifelong process of building confidence and trust. Buster isn’t a fan of the grooming process and comes in medicated to help manage his stress. Instead of forcing perfection, the goal is simple: clean, comfortable, and safe. Every positive experience builds the foundation for the next one. #doggrooming #fearfreegrooming #fearfreegrooming #doggroomingdenver #reactivedogs

I used to believe for years that to help my aggressive reactive dog, I need to be a strong “leader”. I need to show that I can protect him so he learns I’m the person in charge. However we kept failing. Then those trainers said it’s because I’m not firm enough, I’m not confident enough. I struggled for so many years until I met my behavirourist. She told me just run. I was so surprised at first as it was contradictory to what I originally believed. I asked her what if the other dog doesn’t stop? She said just keep running. Because every dog has a safety distance from their owners so eventually they’ll give up. Wear a good pair of sneakers on your walks. Ever since we started doing this, I can’t believe how well it worked. There was once an Australian cattle dog that chased us all the way across the field. But it did work. His fear went away and it became a game. Doesn’t that make my dog think less of me? No, in fact he trusts me more than ever. He now knows he has the option of leaving and I’ll take him out of the situation when he feels uncomfortable. *Disclaimer: I’m not a trainer and this is just what helped my reactive dog. Always consult a reputable behaviourist. #reactivedogs #reactivedogtraining #aggressivedog #dogtraining #dogreactivity

I love him. And some days I feel so overwhelmed I want to disappear for a minute. Not from him— from the weight of always being the calm one. This is for the people who love their dog deeply and still cry after the walk. You’re not weak. You’re carrying a lot. #reactivedogs #germanshepherd #dogsofinstagram

This is what our intro routine looks like when we have a visitor over who wants to meet Matilda. For many dogs, both fearful/reactive and excited, removing the doorbell, knocking and people suddenly appearing through the door triggers can significantly change their behavior around guests. This intentional introduction helps Matilda feel significantly more comfortable and therefore not start a huge barking meltdown. She has a history of barking at people for up to an hour so we are trying to be very proactive to prevent how much barking gets built into the greeting routine. Yes this requires the visitor to be on board following instructions. We only do this with people we want her to build a relationship with (and who want to build a relationship with her). If it wasn’t someone who could or wanted to follow these steps, Matilda would be in another room away from the guest. We have to do this with people 3-4 times until they are pretty much “in the circle.” It’s so so worth the thoughtful intro. Over time, we can likely reduce how long of a walk she needs. We’ll see where her confidence building takes us! Follow @jwdogtraining for more chihuahua, stranger danger, and reactivity tips 🐶 #chihuahua #dogtraining #reactivedog #dogtrainingtips #reactivedogs

Counter conditioning is one of those things people hear about in dog training, but when they actually see it happening, it can look confusing. When a dog reacts in public, especially toward a person, people often assume one of two things. Either the dog is aggressive or the dog is reacting to something the person did. Most of the time neither is actually the case. What you’re usually seeing is a dog having big feelings about something in their environment. In this case, roxy had some strong opinions about a roll of carpet at Home Depot. Not exactly the villain most people expect, but dogs don’t exactly follow our logic when they decide something is suspicious. This was her very first trip to Home Depot. New environments stack a lot of pressure on a dog quickly. Moving carts, people walking past, strange smells, loud noises, and about a hundred new things happening all at once. What you’re seeing here is a great example of trigger stacking. One small stressor leads into another, then another, and before long the dog’s emotional bucket is full. From the outside it can look like the reaction came out of nowhere, but usually there’s a chain of smaller moments building underneath the surface. From our parking lot warm-up to stepping into the store, the entire session lasted about 10 minutes before I called it, that was intentional. Those 10 minutes gave me a clear baseline for what needed to be addressed moving into weeks 3 and 4 of her retraining retreat. Now let’s circle back to counter conditioning. What I’m doing here is not rewarding the reaction. That’s a common misunderstanding when people watch this type of work. You cannot reinforce genuine fear or uncertainty. What you can do is change how the dog feels about the thing creating that emotional response. Instead of rehearsing the same stress-reaction cycle, we begin pairing the trigger with a different emotional experience. Sometimes the win isn’t perfect behavior, sometimes the win is good information and leaving before things spiral. #Sacramentodogs #bayareadogs #reactivedogs #dogbehaviour #dogtrainingadvice

Wagging Tail Doesn’t Mean Friendly ??? Although friendly dogs will wag their tails, we must also remember that dogs showing aggression can also wag their tails, nervous dogs will also wag their tails. Why ??? It’s because a tail wagging is just excitement/adrenaline going through the body, the position of the tail, the body, the ears, the eyes it all matters when reading a dog. Assuming a tail wagging is enough as a stand alone for deciding if a dog is friendly or not has caused a great many people to get bitten. #dogtrainingadvice #dogs #caucasianshepherd #dogsofinsta #bigdogs #reactivedogs #viral

These 3 steps will help make that dream a reality… First, let’s be real—dogs bark and lunge because… well, they’re dogs! It’s just part of their behavior. So, if this is your dog, know that they are NORMAL. LOL. But… it’s not polite, right?! We can’t have our dogs yelling at every neighbor and dog in sight. So, if we want calm, relaxed walks, we have to teach them how! Because let’s be honest—dogs weren’t born with a leash attached or programmed to walk next to us. Their natural instinct? Sniffing, exploring, tracking, chasing. So, now that we’re on the same page… Here’s how to start 👇 Step 1: Pause the neighborhood walks If walks = constant barking and lunging, take a break while you reteach leash skills. 🚶‍♀️ Instead, choose low-distraction areas like cemeteries, business parks, or quiet trails. 🏡 Live in an apartment? Try a grass patch or short potty breaks instead. Step 2: Teach loose leash skills inside Start at home, where it’s easy for your dog to focus! 🎒 Fill a treat bag and reward eye contact 5-10 times. ➡️ Then take one step and reward at your side. 💡 Pro Tip: Always reward where you want your dog to walk—behind your left knee! Step 3: Take it just outside Once your dog can walk 6+ steps inside while checking in with you, take it just outside your home. 🏢 Live in an apartment? Start in the hallway. 🏡 Have a yard? Start there! Begin with eye contact → one step → reward and slowly build up. 🔥 We created a step-by-step course to guide you through this!
