MI🩸BETH IS DEAD🩸BOOK REVIEW
My name is actually Beth, and I guess I'm dead. I probably will be after you read this review. I honestly bought this book on a whim, because of the title alone. Hello? It's my name on a book with blood dripping down it. How cool is that? Unfortunately, that ended up being the most interesting thing about this book for me.
Going forward, I need to keep my expectations in check because it seems like I get burnt every time. I made it about half way through before I started skimming just to get to the reveal, which says alot. The premise had potential, but the story leans way too heavily on "Little Women" references without ever becoming interesting on its own. That's my biggest beef. Props to the author for cooking up this interesting and modern take on a literary classic. I give her that.
For me, the constant POV switches and super short chapters wreck the pacing. And none of the sisters have distinct enough voices to justify it. Each one feels like a one-note personality, and despite the promise of adding depth to Beth, she feels so flat. (How rude! 😉)
The plot gets messy (especially the father’s book angle), the timeline jumps don’t help. Certain references feel dated and distracting. Instead of pulling me in, they just reminded me I’d rather be reading something else.
I hate to be so negative. But overall this was just flat, predictable, and kind of a slog. Life is too short. Onto the next book. I hope it's better!
