LOLast year I decided to add a new cake shape to the Menu- the Rectangle, and then I waited patiently for the orders to come in….fast forward to today, and only a handful of these cakes have seen the light of day 😂 I was so sure this shape would be a hit and here is why:
▪️They are unique! Imagine seeing this at a party, it could be an ice breaker or talking point for your guests
▪️They are versatile! I have seen so many beautiful designs that this shape accommodates (obviously I am partial to the palette knife design I did here!) Vintage style piping would be fun, a minimal look with fresh flowers-I even offered a holiday option!
▪️They are the easiest cake to cut and serve! The thought behind this design was I wanted something you could take to a park, cut & serve and not be covered in buttercream by the end of it! This shape is thin and tall-designed to be sliced up. It serves 8-10.
You might be asking, where did this shape come from? Well I am sure I first saw it on Instagram, there are no original thoughts any more 😂 but also, this is the shape I make for my cake tasting boxes! It provides the perfect slice of three layers of cake and two layers of filling 💕
So why hasn’t it gained popularity? No Clue 😂 but I am here to say, Rectangle Cake I still love you and I am still rooting for you 😭

This cake was designed and created for my daughters Year 6 leavers disco! I had a lot of fun making this cake and obvs eating all the left over sweets 😅 Let’s talk cake 👇🏻
💖 RECTANGLE CAKE 💖
Creating your own board and cake size isn’t that hard. I bought a 6mm MDF wooden board from B&Q and asked the team @lissieloulondon to create me a 2mm food safe acrylic custom size cake board. If you are making your own board you have to make sure you keep it food safe.
I knew once I had decorated this cake it wouldn’t have fit in the fridge! So I individually created smaller rectangle cakes set them in the fridge and joined them together once they were set. I used my structured ganache covering to give the cake the support it needs and then covered and piped on my Elite buttercream. This cake was then left at room temperature. It was actually a very warm day, however as I had structured coated the cake in ganache I knew it wasn’t going anywhere 🫶🏻💖

LIHow long does it take to make a square/rectangle cake? 💫
Square cakes take longer than cylinder cakes, I took approximately 8 hours to make this one from start to finish (excluding shopping and cleaning), but if it was for a client and not my son it would have taken much longer, as I wasn’t fussed getting the back perfect being a family cake. The curved edges also saves time 🙌🏼
