Adding a capacitor helps by charging at the peaks and discharging slowly, reducing ripples and smoothing the output. But here’s the catch 👀 When a heavy load is connected, the capacitor discharges faster, causing the output voltage to drop and distort again. That’s why smoothing alone isn’t enough. A Bridge Rectifier uses four diodes in a bridge configuration to convert both the positive and negative halves of the AC input into DC. ▶️ During the positive half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D1 and D2 are forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the direction indicated. Diodes D3 and D4 are reverse-biased during this half-cycle and do not conduct. ▶️ During the negative half-cycle of the AC waveform, diodes D3 and D4 become forward-biased, allowing current to flow through the load in the same direction as during the positive half-cycle. Diodes D1 and D2 are reverse-biased in this cycle, preventing current from flowing through them. This consistent direction of current through the load results in a continuous DC output, as seen in the rectified waveform. In practical applications, a smoothing capacitor is often added to the output of the rectifier to smooth out the ripples in the DC output, providing a more steady and smooth DC voltage.
