Just as red knots come to South Carolina this spring, we have reached a major win for the threatened shorebird and horseshoe crabs — closure of horseshoe crab harvest on all critical red knot stopover beaches in South Carolina this year, as well as several other beaches. The multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical company Charles River Laboratories’ harvests thousands of horseshoe crabs to extract their blood for use in the biomedical industry. Due to the harvest, the threatened red knot is unable to feast on its critical, nutrient-rich food source of horseshoe crab eggs needed to continue its 9,000-mile migration. Learn how we stopped this year’s horseshoe crab harvest on behalf of our partners @ConservationLeague and @DefendersofWildlife at our link in bio.

Though nesting season for shorebirds is nearing an end—many beachgoers will still be encountering them as fall migration begins. 🏖 That’s why it’s still so important to look out for our beloved coastal birds while at the beach and remember to #ShareTheShore by picking up trash, keeping pets leashed, and giving shorebirds at least 100 feet of space. ✨ It’s horseshoe crab season! ✨🌊 From approximately May through early July, horseshoe crabs migrate from deep water onto the shoreline, where they mate and then lay eggs. Horseshoe crab eggs are a vital food source for many migrating shorebirds, especially the Red Knot, which flies all the way from Argentina in the spring! ⚠️If you see a horseshoe crab on the shore, please leave it alone! In this video trained professionals are handling these animals. Their tails are especially fragile: and while they look scary, they are actually completely harmless animals! Horseshoe crabs use their tails to flip themselves upright, and their exoskeletons protect them from most predators. #SpringMigration #HorseshoeCrabs #RedKnot #NYCWile #ExploreBK

The Red Knot is a true marathon traveler, flying up to 9,000 miles between the Arctic tundra and Tierra del Fuego. But their journey depends on a critical stopover: Delaware Bay, where they feast on horseshoe crab eggs to refuel. Overharvesting of horseshoe crabs once drastically reduced this essential food supply, but thanks to ongoing protections, Red Knots still have a fighting chance. Audio description: A laidback glam-rock song with cowbell, electric piano and organs, bass, guitar, saxophone, and trumpet. A voice sings “I’m hooked on a feeling, I’m high on believing, That you’re in love with me. Lips as sweet as candy, It’s taste is on my mind. #Repost @eaafp ・・・ ✨ Follow the Red Knot’s epic journey! From tundra and coastlines to cities, the Red Knot’s migration reminds us why Shared Spaces matter. 🐦💬 The Red Knot, a migratory shorebird, travels long distances, moving between wetlands, coastal areas, and marshes. But global coastal development is threatening the stopover sites these birds rely on during migration. Tourist developments, oil spills, plastic pollution, and rising sea levels are all impacting these critical habitats. Join us this World Migratory Bird Day 2025 for the premiere of our new animation. Let’s create bird-friendly cities and protect the habitats they call home. 🎬 [Subtitles: ENG/SPN] Link: https://youtu.be/fyGvAlOlNUg #WMBD2025 #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #SharedSpaces #RedKnot #BirdFriendlyCities #EFTA #CMS

Five Migratory Birds You May Not Have Heard Of When we think of bird migration, we often think of pink flamingo flocks, graceful cranes and vibrant ducks. But there are many long-distance travelers that miss the limelight. Here are five migratory birds that you probably haven’t heard of. Which other winter migrants slip under the radar? @wild_cumberland
We have received a LOT of questions about the proposed South End Beach Vessel Landing Zone (“VLZ”) included in the proposed Visitor Use Management Plan (VUMP). - This “VLZ” is located within Critical Habitat for multiple species. - The VLZ would ‘shift’ based on coastline conditions and/or resource protection needs. - No data is provided on the number of boats that can dock in the VLZ. - Landing & anchoring zones and accessible/nonaccessible areas would be delineated by buoys, markers, signage, or flagging. - Signage for fees & commercial use requirements would be installed. - No public safety measures for the VLZ are reflected in this plan. - The proposed area will result in the direct loss of critical beach-nesting bird habitat through the entire 1,900 foot zone. - The increased and/or concentrated volume and frequency of pedestrian traffic and associated recreational activities will also impact adjacent protected habitat. - The proposed VUMP fails to adequately address if or how recreational impacts will be contained within the VLZ or restricted beyond its boundaries. - The VLZ will require constant monitoring and staff for proper compliance. This VLZ is only *one* of the changes proposed for the south end of Cumberland Island. The VUMP also proposes trail changes; construction of two shade pavilions; construction of a new shower and restroom facility; and establishing a new campsite (Beach Creek) — all within proximity to the new VLZ. Read the entire plan at wildcumberland.org, and be sure to send your feedback to the NPS before December 30!

We stopped off at Waikanae Beach on Sunday. It was so windy I didn't think there was much hope of seeing anything, but I was pleasantly surprised to come across a small flock of 8 Bar-tailed godwits and lesser knot/red knot at the spit. It was like being sandblasted, so I filmed it all at 120 fps, as there was no point in capturing the sound of gale-force winds through the mic. Incredible that these small birds undertake an 11,000-kilometre journey from Alaska to New Zealand and then back again in time for breeding season, which is the longest non-stop flight undertaken by any bird. 🎧Landing - Complication @waikanaeestuarynz #bartailedgodwit #godwit #redknot #shorebirds #shorebirdsofinstagram #migration #migratingbirds #alaska #newzealand #wildbirds #wildbirdsphotography #canon #canonphotography #canonnz

Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) proposed to increase the harvest of horseshoe crabs for bait and for blood, please speak up and ask them to keep current protections in place! . The deadline for public comments is Friday, September 30. Please send an email about your disagreement of this proposal to comments@asmfc.org - Subject line: Horseshoe Crab Draft Addendum VIII. . Increasing crab harvesting will have a significant impact on the federally threatened Red Knot and other shorebirds that depend on horseshoe crab eggs during spring migration stopovers in the Delaware Bay! .
