I’m that neighbour… The one stealing grass clippings and bags of leaves 😄 We love making compost at home, and when I find a product I love, I clearly have no self-control — now we have two Aerobins. No smells, no rats, works even in winter, and turns kitchen scraps and garden waste into compost instead of landfill. And the leachate? Liquid gold for the garden. Zero waste. Happy soil. Weird neighbour energy. For more details mail me on tashievanzyl@gmail.com

Always thought composting was messy. It doesn’t have to be. One simple system we love: keep a small, lined compost bucket under the sink for daily scraps, then transfer the liners into your larger lined compost bin. It keeps smells down, cleanup easy, and makes composting feel manageable. Clean compost habits = composting you can stick with. turning food scraps into black gold 🍂 composting is honestly the perfect example of how nature works ♻️ what used to be banana peels, avocado pits, and random veggie scraps is now nutrient-rich soil for our garden 🌱 bc here’s the wild part: when food scraps end up in landfills, they release methane gas (which is 20x more harmful than carbon) and considering that 40% of food in the US gets wasted, composting is actually one of the hottest solutions out there 🔥 for inspo + how-to’s follow my girl @compostable.kate and check out @lacompost if you’re in LA 🫶

♻️ From Yogurt Tubs to Compost Bin! Why throw away yogurt tubs when you can turn them into a mini compost system that saves waste and feeds your plants? 🌱💚 — 🛠 What you’ll need: - 2 empty yogurt tubs (or any sturdy plastic containers) - Drill / screwdriver / anything to make holes - Baking soda + dish soap (to remove labels) - Soil & space in your garden — 📋 Steps: 1️⃣ Rinse & clean your tubs - Once you’re done eating the yogurt, rinse it well. - Remove labels by soaking in warm water with baking soda + dish soap for 15–30 mins — the ink slides right off. 2️⃣ Set up Tub 1 — Food Scrap Collector - Keep this tub near your kitchen sink or chopping area. - Throw in fruit peels, veggie scraps, coffee grounds, etc. 3️⃣ Set up Tub 2 — Compost Bin (buried) - Drill holes around the sides for airflow (oxygen = happy compost) - Drill holes at the bottom for drainage (so it doesn’t become a smelly swamp) - Bury it in your garden with the lid just above ground level 4️⃣ Layer your compost - Start with a brown layer (carbon-rich: dry leaves, shredded paper, cardboard) - Then add a green layer (nitrogen-rich: food scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings) - Alternate layers as you go 5️⃣ Keep it happy - Avoid meat, bones, dairy, oily food — your compost is on a healthy diet 🥗 - Maintain some moisture — like a damp sponge - Give it a little stir once in a while to keep it aerobic (no bad smells) 6️⃣ Wait & harvest In 2–3 months, you’ll have rich, dark, crumbly compost a.k.a. “black gold.” Feed it to your plants and watch them thrive 🌱 — 🌰 Browns (Carbon-rich) - Dry leaves - Cardboard (shredded) - Egg Trays - Paper (shredded, no glossy ink) - Sawdust - Twigs & small branches 🥬 Greens (Nitrogen-rich) - Fruit & veggie scraps - Coffee grounds & tea leaves - Fresh grass clippings - Eggshells (crushed) - Plant trimmings — 📌 Save this for your next gardening day 🔄 Share it with a friend who always says “Aiyo so hot ah today” but still throws banana peels in the trash #compost #compostbin #recycle #repurpose #fertilizer #soil #plants #foodwaste #sustainability #sustainableliving #kitchenhacks #yogurt #beginner #foodscraps #howtocompost

Brewing up a new batch of compost! Spring is almost here, and I have been brewing batches of compost since the end of summer. This is a new batch I just started with kitchen scraps (fruits, vegetables, egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, dryer lint, rice and/or pasta water … just about anything I could get my hands on that is good to make rich compost). I properly mix that with some soil I already had in the bin, then added water to it for dampening. I also had dried leaves, grass clippings, and such the like that I added to it. I’ll keep adding until the bin gets full, closing it up and letting that sit for some time, stirring intermittently for even distribution. My compost bin you see here has had a batch brewing since last summer and I keep turning it on a regular basis again for distribution. By the time spring/summer rolls around it’ll be good to go. It really is fun making your own compost, and it also helps with the expense of having to buy all the compost you need when you can actually make your own. You should try it too if you’re not already doing so. #gardeningtips #compost #compostmaking #sustainablegardening #thebloomsandherbsgarden

Compost tumblers are a great way to turn what you would have thrown out into fertile usable material for your plants. It’s also important to keep the contents from drying out, so if youre not getting rain regularly, hit it with some water once or twice a week . Happy composting!😁🌱#OptimisticKitchen #garden #composting #reducewaste #compostumbler

Turn kitchen waste into black gold—no smell, no stress 🌿 Composting at home is easier than you think. Just follow this simple layering method 👇 Step 1️⃣ Add a layer of browns (dry leaves, shredded cardboard) Step 2️⃣ Add raw kitchen waste (fruit & veggie peels only ❌ no cooked food / non-veg) Step 3️⃣ Pour a little buttermilk (chaach)—it boosts good microbes, speeds up composting & keeps odors away Step 4️⃣ Cover again with browns and repeat the layers That’s it! Consistency = healthy compost + happy plants 🌼 Follow along for my composting & home gardening journey 🌱 #homecomposting #kitchenwastecompost #organicgardening #growyourown #sustainableliving

Today we are back and I am sharing how anyone can easily turn a few old kitchen scraps into a new supply of delicious fresh food. It’s worth noting there are so many ways we can grow our groceries, but these four tips have to be my favourite. With the cost of food getting higher and higher I like to have some fun with my old off cuts, and what I can’t make into a zero waste recipe, I often try to regrow for fun. I would like to mention not all scraps you see online can will work, with two good examples being lettuce and carrots. Lettuce will bolt when re grown giving you very bitter leaves and carrots will grow into a flower, which you can then use to gather the seeds to grow fresh carrots the following year. If you live in a warmer country a fun one to try is pineapple, just replant the top spikey leaves, and be patient as it can take two years to grow, micro greens from seeds is another fun one to try, as well sprouting garlic and onions for their little green shoots too. While growing food scraps won’t save world hunger, it is surprisingly fun and also a great way to get kids involved in gardening and growing food too. Most of these projects can be done with just a little space on your windowsill 😊 Unfortunately I’ve been ill the last week, but I’m better now so there will be lots of new videos coming soon, I love you all, Joe 😊🌱💚 #foodscraps #zerowaste #sustainability #gardening #growyourown
