REEDIT: IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: one person in the comments mentioned an issue with this “hack” not working for every single art medium and color of paper. So use see-through sticky notes/tracing paper to test your color swatches with discretion. This method works best for me with gel pens, acrylic, and more opaque gouaches on colorful paper. But if you’re using white paper, this method to test your colors should show you the true color of most mediums (wet and dry). I.e. it’s worked for ~me~ when I test alcohol markers, water-based markers, and watercolors on translucent surfaces like this sticky note. However, wet materials don’t typically like staying on transparent sticky notes, so I use tracing paper as an alternative for these mediums (I mentioned tracing paper as an alt in one of my pinned comment). Personally if I’m drawing on a colorful piece of paper and want to use markers/watercolors, I’ll stain/color a test scrap of paper a similar color as the final paper. That way, when I overlay my test swatches on the stained-swatch sheet, I know what to expect.
But like I said before,I haven’t tried every single medium and paper combination with this swatch technique. So make your own swatches. Not every art tip video (especially 5-second-long ones like this) is going to go over how to use the tip with everything. Every tip/hack you see on the internet has exceptions, inclusions, and alternate ways to use them.
Idk what color theory is. Don’t try to explain it to me, it makes me nauseous.
