repost @alfred.reformance Should women training differently than men? The principles behind muscle growth and strength apply to both men and women. Menโ€™s and womenโ€™s muscles respond to resistance training through hypertrophy and neural adaptations, but these adaptation processes are not gender specific. While some anatomical and physiological differences between genders may impact program design, such as the exercise selection, volume, and intensity, they are more specific to individual needs rather gender differences. One example that often comes to mind is hormonal differences. Men generally have higher testosterone levels than women. Therefore, itโ€™s expected that men would have a significant advantage in muscle growth and strength gains. However, the influence of testosterone on muscle growth may not be as significant as once thought. Testosterone levels affect how much muscle mass one starts with, but it doesnโ€™t significantly affect how fast one can grow that muscle relatively. Men may see more significant absolute gains because they have more muscle, but the rate of growth relative to their starting point is similar to that of women. That said,hormonal differences between genders, coupled with distinct fat storage and muscle-building patterns, might affect training focus or aesthetic goals, but it does not fundamentally alter the trainingโ€™s approach. Rather than asking whether women need to train differently from men, the focus should be on how any individual can best train to meet their unique goals. Effective training lies in a personโ€™s ability to respond to training, their fitness level, health status, and personal preferences. In the grand scheme of things, the potential for growth and progress is more dependent on the individual rather than their gender. Injury rates in powerlifting range from about 1 to 4.4 injuries per 1,000 hours of trainingโ€”low compared to many other sports. However, this doesnโ€™t mean injuries donโ€™t occur. There are still times when pain or minor niggles reduce performance. The most inconvenient time for this is during the final 4โ€“6 weeks of competition prep. This period is when an injury can most strongly disrupt an athleteโ€™s confidence heading into a meet. As an athlete, it can feel like all hope is lostโ€”that the PBs you aimed for are out the window and all your training was for nothing. This mindset can reinforce those outcomes and may increase the likelihood of a poor meet. After taking 24โ€“48 hours to process the situation, shift your focus toward what you can control. Work with your coach to adjust the program and seek outside support (e.g., physiotherapy) to address contributing factors to the pain. On game day, take one lift at a time and select loads that reflect your current capacity. Realistically, thatโ€™s all you can do in any competition. Negative emotions often arise when expectations donโ€™t align with current circumstances, so adjust your expectations to match your situation and give yourself the best chance of a positive outcome. repost @alfred.reformance Itโ€™s always been taught that deadlifting with a rounded back is dangerous and drastically increases the risk of injury, particularly in the lumbar spine. An extended or neutral spine is always encouraged. Upon further investigation, the supporting evidence for a rounded back increasing injury risk in humans appears to be limited. In one paper, there was no evidence to support the use of advice or training in working techniques with or without lifting equipment to prevent back pain or consequent disability in workers in physical professions (PMID: 18244957). Considering the length-tension (L-T) relationship of muscle, the amount of tension produced by a muscle is a feature of its length. When tested under isometric conditions, the maximal force produced or measured will differ as the muscle lengthens or shortens, with the midpoint potentially being more optimal for force production. A rounded or flexed back may allow the hips to get closer to the bar, reducing the torque requirement that the hips and glutes need to overcome. A decreased torque requirement means you can lift heavier weights. So what does this mean?
