A 488 nm cyan laser pointer is refracted through an optical element with lumpy surface features which create this aurora/nebula effect. A standard round diamond uses 57 or 58 triangular and kite shaped facets to refract light into a bunch of sparkles. The Opposed Bar Cut (or Pixel Cut) is the exact opposite of that. It’s a kind of step-cut: Instead of scattering light, it organises it. By cutting long, parallel rectangular trenches on the pavilion (bottom) and intersecting them at exactly 90 degrees with trenches on the crown (top), the lapidary creates an optical illusion. The light gets trapped in a grid. As you tilt the stone, the intersections of those bars flash on and off.
