Part 1: Rendering Beef Tallow Ask for “beef suet” for more pure and nutrient dense. Beef suet is the best option, but you can use any beef fat (it just might take longer to get pure). I got this from my local butcher, he was so nice and ran it through the grinder to make it easier to work with. But most times you’ll have to cut it all up. Make sure you keep it in your fridge. For the first render only I did a “wet” render to help it be more “pure” in the end (also helps get rid of beefy smell). But we want to get all the water out so it becomes shelf stable. By the 5th or 6th render (cooking 6 times) you’ll see there won’t be any “impurities” to scrape off and it’s ready to make into skincare. If you only want this for cooking you only have to render 1-2 times. Follow for part 2 where I’ll make whipped tallow. 💛 #beeftallow #tallow #diy #tallowskincare #beeffat

Rendering your own beef tallow is really easy! There’s something very satisfying about using tallow or lard that you rendered yourself. 🐄❤️ Here are some tips for making tallow: ✨ Ask your farmer or butcher for beef suet. They’ll know what you mean! If you’re lucky, they might even be willing to grind it for you (and that’ll save you lots of time)! ✨ Be sure to keep the lid off—this is really important. While rendering, any remaining moisture will evaporate ensuring the tallow won’t spoil. ✨ Make sure to use the smaller burner & the lowest setting on your stovetop. You don’t want the tallow to burn. I actually use a heat diffuser for making tallow because my stovetop is too hot for a simmer. ✨ Stir occasionally and keep an eye on it. Rendering usually just takes a few hours. Once the cracklings turn a golden color and all the fat has melted down, the tallow is ready. ✨ Use a fine mesh strainer to filter out any impurities. Some people also use a cheese cloth but I don’t find this to be necessary. ✨ You can keep the tallow cracklings to eat or feed to the birds outside! ✨ Tallow is solid at room temperature, and will also turn from a golden color to white! ✨ If rendered properly, tallow has a long shelf life of up to a year at room temp or years in the fridge. Use your nose as a guide. You’ll know if it goes bad! ✨ Tallow has a high smoke point of about 400 degrees fahrenheit and is great for searing meats like steak! We use it for cooking just about everything. It’s a much healthier alternative to industrial seed oils (ex. canola oil). We use the same process for rendering lard or other animal fats. Once you do it a few times, it’s super easy! Beef tallow is expensive, so you’ll save lots of money making your own. Follow along for more real food recipes. 🫶🏻 P.S.
