LEWe get so many people asking us about the software we used to create Les Lucioles I thought I'd make a quick pipeline rundown for you! This is by no means the only or best way to go about making an animated short film but here's the pipeline that worked for us:
Concept Art and Storyboard: Procreate and Photoshop for digital drawing and then davinci resolve to edit together the 2d animatic, a lot of our artists also drew concept art traditionally
Modelling: Characters were sculpted with zbrush, and assets were, for the most part, modelled with Maya
Texturing: Substance Painter and Designer were our main softwares for texturing (shading networks were created with renderman)
Rendering and Lighting: Both were done with renderman (check the link in our bio for our rookies article fulling breaking down our lighting process)
Rigging and Animation : Both Rigging and Animation were done with Maya
Cloth and Fur simulation: Both were done with Houdini, all of our character's clothing has very fine simulated fur on it to add to the stop motion look of it
Compositing: All compositing was done with Nuke with the final colour grading done with Davinci

AKWrapping up this R&D for now—learned a lot through this process! Creating a Hydroman FX was both exciting and challenging, as water-based characters always push the boundaries of VFX. Using Houdini’s FLIP solver and advanced meshing techniques, I developed a fluid-driven humanoid that seamlessly interacts with its environment.
