7 steps for explaining research gap✅ . Complete example: Identify Your Topic of Interest: Start with a broad subject area that excites you. This could be a societal issue, a scientific phenomenon, or a problem in a specific field. Example: The impact of climate change on agriculture. Narrow Down Your Focus: Refine your broad topic into a specific aspect or issue to make it manageable. Focus on a particular area, group, or variable. Example: The impact of climate change on crop yield in arid regions. Review the Literature: Explore existing studies and theories related to your topic. Identify gaps in knowledge or areas that need further investigation. This will help you craft a researchable question and avoid duplicating existing work. Formulate a Clear and Researchable Question: Create a question that guides your study and addresses a specific gap in the literature. Ensure the question is focused, clear, and researchable. Example: How does climate change, specifically increased temperatures, affect the yield of wheat in arid regions? Align with Research Objectives: Your research question should directly reflect your study’s objectives. A well-aligned question ensures a clear methodology and helps draw meaningful conclusions. Example Objective: To analyze the effect of temperature increases due to climate change on wheat yield in arid regions. Consider the Type of Research Question: Decide whether your question is descriptive, comparative, causal, or exploratory. Specify the Scope: Define Variables or Key Concepts: Be clear about the variables or concepts involved in the question. Geographical or Temporal Boundaries: Specify the location or time period of interest to make the question more focused. Example: How has the wheat yield in arid regions of North Africa changed over the past decade due to rising temperatures? . #phd #research

Understand the basics: How to critically appraise the literature you are reviewing? There are two main aspects to consider. I've been using all this information for my students to help them write and contribute to publishing a review. So steal my tips! The first is a more obvious one - you want to critically evaluate the research design, methods, and results the authors share (i.e., the actual literature). What to look at specifically? 1️⃣ sample size! Did they have enough participants/observations to claim their results are reliable? 2️⃣ data collection! Have data been consistently collected across the sample? Are the ethics and consents in place? Can you spot anything non-standard in the process? 3️⃣ research design! Is the research design standardised? If they tried something novel that is not necessarily wrong, but remember that differences in research design and methodology might make the results of the study not comparable even if they test the same hypothesis. And these subtle differences in methodology is what you need to spot and comment on. 4️⃣ data analysis! What statistical tests did they use? Are those appropriate? Are the results also practically significant? Remember, not every statistically significant difference means real-life practical difference. 5️⃣ conclusions! Do their conclusions match up with their results? Sometimes researchers over generalise their conclusions or bloat its significance to make it sound more useful. Be careful about that. Comment if you want part 2 about less obvious aspects to review. 📝 Anyone experienced with reviews, feel free to comment your tips too! 🫶🏼 #writingtips #writing #review #literature #literaturereview

You finish the literature review feeling excited… and then suddenly realize your “novel” topic already has multiple studies, systematic reviews, and even a meta-analysis. Painful, yes — but that does not always mean there is no research gap. A research gap does not only mean “nobody has studied this topic before.” In reality, a gap can exist in many forms: 1. Evidence gap — existing studies show conflicting or inconsistent findings. 2. Knowledge gap — very little research exists on the topic. 3. Practical gap — what happens in real practice differs from what research recommends. 4. Methodological gap — earlier studies used limited or weaker methods, so better methods may reveal more. 5. Empirical gap — a theory or idea exists, but it has not been tested with real-world data. 6. Theoretical gap — the topic lacks a strong theoretical explanation or framework. 7. Population gap — certain groups, settings, or regions have not been adequately studied.** So no — just because a few papers already exist does not mean your topic is dead. Sometimes the real skill in research is not finding a completely untouched topic, but identifying what is still missing in the existing evidence. That’s where real research begins. #phdlife #researchgap #researchmeme #meta #researchtips

How to structure literature review?✅ . 5 C’s of Literature review CITE — Acknowledge & Validate Sources • Establishes authority and credibility. • Provides a historical and theoretical framework for your research. • Helps identify trends, foundational theories, and key scholars in your field. COMPARE — Identify Similarities in the Literature • Strengthens your argument by showing a consensus in the field. • Helps you find well-supported theories or methodologies. • Identifies gaps in research that may need further exploration. 5 C’s of Literature review CONTRAST — Highlight Differences & Divergent Views • Highlights the complexity of the topic and prevents oversimplification. • Encourages critical thinking about why discrepancies exist. • Can reveal biases, limitations, or unresolved questions in the research. CRITIQUE — Evaluate Strengths & Weaknesses • Helps you build a solid foundation for your own research by using high-quality sources. • Prevents reliance on flawed or outdated studies. • Encourages deeper engagement with the material rather than just summarizing. CONNECT — Integrate Findings to Build Your Research Narrative • Ensures your literature review is not just a summary but a meaningful analysis. • Helps justify your research by showing where it fits in the existing body of knowledge. • Provides a logical flow leading to your study’s objectives and methodology. #phd #ezephd #literaturereview

I don’t just love research 🫶🏻 I love what research does. Research helps you: • make sense of messy information • ask better questions • solve real problems • explain complex things clearly These are the same skills businesses pay for every day. It’s why I went from a social science PhD → Head of Research in defence & tech. And it’s why I now help people translate their research skills beyond academia. Because research isn’t just academic. It’s a life skill. And if you know how to use it, it becomes incredibly valuable! If you’re trying to figure out how your research skills translate beyond academia, that’s exactly what I share on my page, drop me a message if you want to chat 💬 #researchskills #academictoindustry #doctorallife #beyondacademia #researchtoindustry

Problem Statement and Research Gap The problem statement defines what requires investigation. The research gap defines why your investigation is necessary. As highlighted in research design literature, a study derives its legitimacy from its contribution—conceptual, contextual,l or methodological. No clearly identified gap means no scholarly contribution. Comment “GAP” if you’d like a structured framework for identifying research gaps. #researchscholars #phdlife #managementresearch #academicwriting #researchdesign
