Who has ever felt lost in how to structure your daily reviews or warm-ups? 🙋🏼‍♀️ One super easy and effective way to structure your retrieval practice is using the recite, recall, apply framework! Let’s break it down… 🗣️ RECITE: This is where students recite information together as a class. Usually, this means reading from a slide! ✨ Why is the “recite” stage important? ✨ 1. It ensures a solid foundation. 2. It reduces cognitive overload during retrieval. 3. It reinforces attention and engagement. 🤔 RECALL: This is where students are asked to remember what they have just read and respond, typically orally. ✨ Why is the “recall” stage important? ✨ 1. It causes a “desirable difficulty.” 2. It forces students’ brain to work a little harder. 3. It allows the teacher to identify gaps. 📝 APPLY: This is where students apply the information by answering a question independently, often using mini-whiteboards. It requires students to use the knowledge in new and varied contexts. ✨ Why is the “apply” stage important? ✨ 1. It promotes higher-order thinking. 2. It helps students engage in transfer of learning. 3. It fosters the development of schemas. 4. It moves knowledge from students’ working memory to their long-term memory, preventing them from forgetting. 📢 IMPORTANT TIP: As students gain more exposure to concepts over time, you can start to gradually remove earlier stages. You know your students best! For example, for a particular concept, you might structure your daily reviews like this… Exposure 1: Recite, recall, apply Exposure 2: Recite, recall, apply Exposure 3: Recall, apply Exposure 4: Apply #dailyreviews #retrievalpractice #aussieteacher #educator #education #teaching #teacher #teachersofinstagram #memory #learning #aussieteachertribe #perthteacher

Funny little realisation during professional learning today. We were talking about cognitive load theory, retrieval practice and long-term memory… and I suddenly thought: This is exactly what teachers need to do when preparing for interviews. Research shows that stress can actually make it harder to retrieve information, even when you know it really well. That’s why people walk out of interviews thinking “Why didn’t I say that story?” The solution isn’t cramming the night before. It’s spaced practice — revisiting and speaking your key stories out loud over time so they sit in your long-term memory and are ready when you need them. Just like we teach our students. #keyselectioncriteria #classroomjobs #teacherinterview #interviewanxiety #interviews

First I’ll need my phoneme/grapheme chart. This is how I keep track of all past-learned concepts. I always start with a phonemic awareness warm-up based on student need. Then Red Words are reviewed. Next is the Three-Part Drill! Then I introduce the new concept. Students will spell words and write sentences containing the target concept. Afterwards, we learn a new Red Word and practice syllabication. Then it’s time for our decodable text! If we have time, students go through their word lists, highlight the target concept, and read the words in isolation. Students are always sent home with an extra decodable, word list, and a fluency activity if needed. #structuredliteracy #certifiedtutor #ortongillinghamcertification #dyslexiainterventionist #readwithmrsa

🧠✨ Learning through play and cognitive challenges ✨🧠. In today’s session, we worked with an inference board game, promoting key executive functions such as working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility. Through guided play, the child engaged in predicting outcomes, adjusting strategies, and making decisions based on changing information. We also carried out a color-coded dictation activity, designed to strengthen attention, processing speed, and especially cognitive flexibility. By linking colors with specific responses, the task required constant mental shifting and adaptive thinking. These activities not only support academic skills but also enhance essential cognitive processes for everyday learning and problem-solving. #neuropsicopedagogía #aprendizaje #psicopedagogia #educacióninclusiva

This technique is probably my favorite active recall method because it allows you to engage with the material (not just passively reading through it), reinforce your knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The three steps unraveled: 🔥Step1: Active Recall - the blurting part. After reading a lesson from a subject or even just a paragraph, cover the material and recall as much as possible from memory. Write down or say out loud what you remember. I prefer writing down, since my style of writing down is usually with arrows and mind maps and stuff like that that help me visualize the concept im studying. But I have to note here that this method also works If you say the things you read prior out loud(it’s also not as time-consuming). Choose whatever works for you. In this step it’s crucial not to look at your textbook while recalling the material. 🔥Step2: Review What You Missed: After the blurting phase, go back over what you’ve written. Using a blue pen, write down what you missed, indicating areas where your memory was incomplete. Essentially noting what you forgot to even mention. 🔥Step3: Identify Mistakes: Next, review your written responses again. This time, use a red pen to note down what you got wrong, highlighting any errors or misconceptions. Essentially noting what you remembered incorrectly/misunderstood. Combine this with pomodoro focused time and you’ve got yourself a very productive studying session ❤️ Tell me how it goes 😊 #study #studygram #studystudystudy #studyingmotivation #studyingtechniques #studyinginspo #motivational #studyinghard #univlog #unilife #medstudent #medicalstudent #studyingtechnique #activerecall #focusing #focusedstudy #pomodoro #desk #deskgoals #desksetup

Read below✨ 1️⃣ Active Recall + Spaced Repetition Active recall comes in different forms such as flashcards, practice tests (quizzes), summarising, teaching somebody else (Feynman technique). Spaced Repetition To memorise quickly: • 1st repetition -> right after learning • 2nd repetition -> after 15-20 minutes • 3rd repetition -> after 6-8 hours • 4th repetition -> after 24 hours To memorise for a long time: • 1st repetition -> right after learning • 2nd repetition -> after 20-30 minutes •3rd repetition -> after 1 day •4th repetition - after 2-3 weeks •5th repetition -> after 2-3 months 2️⃣Practice + Test Solve as many numerical questions as possible. Finish a topic and immediately solve questions even if the topic is among the basics. Test Yourself Build the habit of testing yourself immediately after finishing a topic/chapter. Use online tools or download textbook PDFs and solve them as many times as possible. 3️⃣Elaborate Interrogation Ask questions like “Why is this true?”, “Why does it make sense that...?” “Why would this fact be true of this [X] and not some other [X]?” Researchers recommend using EI frequently to have a cumulative effect on students. It works best when you try to understand and explain the gaps or questions based on your understanding, then filling in thise gaps with the right resources. 4️⃣Lecture Note taking Before: • spend 1-2 hours before the lecture to study the material to be taught in class • note down any question you get while studying in a sticky note • carry the question in class and ask them, then write or highlight the answer. After: • study & write down the questions + answers in a separate notebook • use the SQ3R method to study the rest of the topic/chapter Good luck🍀💓✨
