A lot of people love ridgebacks - they’re strong, regal, loyal, intelligent dogs. But not everyone should have one. The top reason most ridgebacks end up rehomed or in shelters is because people don’t have the time (or energy) to spend with them. Honestly, probably a top reason any dog ends up in a shelter… they are full time responsibilities 🧡 Reasons not to get a Rhodesian ridgeback: - if you have a very busy lifestyle and are out of the house most of the time - if you aren’t willing to go through 2-3 years of training bite inhibition, proper socialization and play, managing prey drive, and more - if you want a “Disney dog” or a dog who will be 100% handler engaged and biddable - if you don’t want to share your furniture or blankets 😆 Okay that last one seems like a joke, but it’s not… I think most of my fellow ridgeback owners will agree haha

"You shouldn't run with your Ridgeback until they're fully grown or you risk damaging their growth plates and causing life-long health problems." Sound familiar? That's what I read over and over again before bringing home my first Ridgeback and I was terrified about being a new owner who stupidly broke his dog FOREVER Not only did I never run with Eko as a puppy, but I fretted about long walks and short hikes. I swear I was still carrying him up and down stairs when he was like 60 lbs because I'd read somewhere that stairs could cause similarly catastrophic problems During one of my perilous trips as a sherpa I realized something was wrong. These incredibly athletic dogs who could chase lions for tens of miles couldn't handle a jog? I, like many, fell victim to porcelain puppy syndrome and treated Eko like a fragile vase. After doing more research, I realized the common wisdom wasn't so wise In truth the advice should be, "Don't start a structured, significant mileage, leashed-running exercise program with your dog until they're full grown. BUT do start training the skill of running as early as possible" There's so much meaningful training and practice you can do with your young Ridgeback that will help build the skill and experience needed to start running longer mileage when they're older. Teach them to start, stop, heel, turn and follow your pace. Make it fun!  Keep the skill building short and engaging like any other puppy training and I promise your Ridgeback won't break! But as always, don't trust some idiot on the internet. Consult with your vet and start building the foundation you'll need for years of long runs together

From bouncing off the walls and dragging Tricia all over the place, to walking beautifully by her side — Darla the 20 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback is absolutely smashing it! 🐾✨ This transformation didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of consistent effort, patience, and a real commitment to training. Tricia has truly put in the work — and it shows. It's been an absolute pleasure to support these two on their journey and receive regular updates on their progress between sessions. As a trainer, seeing Tricia’s smile at the end of this clip is everything. That’s what it’s all about — enjoying your dog, enjoying the process, and building that bond through training. Anything is possible with the dedication Tricia has shown, and I hope this inspires others to believe that a calmer, more connected walk is within reach. 💪🐶 👏 Let’s hear it for Team Darla! RecallTipsBelow/ (Male) Rhodesian Ridgebacks can be strong-willed and easily distracted, especially in the forest where wildlife scents and movements trigger their natural hunting instinct. Because of their size and power, reliable obedience and focus on the owner are essential. Training should build impulse control and recall even with heavy distractions, using consistent, positive reinforcement. A well-trained Ridgeback that listens in such situations is not only safer for itself and other animals, but also a much more enjoyable companion, as the bond of trust and respect allows freedom without losing control. 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 1. Recall games 🎯Make coming back fun and rewarding. Use high-value treats or a favorite toy, call once, and celebrate when he returns. 2. Long line training 🎺Practice in the forest with a 10–15 m line so he learns recall safely, even with distractions. 3. Distraction training 🎪 Start with mild distractions (other dogs, people), reward focus on you, then gradually increase to more tempting ones like scents or wildlife. 4. Impulse control 🧘🏽‍♀️Teach “wait” and “leave it,” reinforcing calmness before releasing him to play or explore. 5. Consistency & patience 🧩Ridgebacks are intelligent but stubborn; short, positive, and regular sessions work best. #rhodesianridgeback #ridgeback #strongdog #muscledog #adventuredog #fitdog #rhodesian #lionhunter #hundeliebe #dogtraining #dogtips #recall #dogrecall #training #rhodesianridgebacksuniverse #dogtrainingtricks #dogmale #dogfemale #doghunt #obedience

In all seriousness, I believe that any dog is okay for a first-time dog owner IF they do research and are willing to put in the work required to fulfill the dog’s needs. - However, I truly don’t recommend Vizslas or Rhodesian Ridgebacks to *most* people. Everyone sees my dogs and wants the same breeds because of how beautiful they are, but neither are for the faint of heart! - Vizslas are very high energy dogs. They need a lot of exercise to be fulfilled, and if they aren’t fulfilled, they can be pests to live with! Rowan can go for an 8 mile hike and pick up a toy to play fetch as soon as we walk through the door. These dogs are FULL. OF. ENERGY. A lot of people do not understand what “high energy” really means or requires. They are also sensitive dogs and would crawl inside of your skin if they could. They give “velcro” a new depth of meaning. They are wonderful dogs when their needs are met — very sweet and good-natured — but they can be a pretty intense breed to own in terms of time and exercise requirements. - Rhodesian Ridgebacks can also have a lot of energy, though, in my opinion, less than a Vizsla. RRs require a lot of socialization: more than the average dog. They are naturally aloof with strangers and can be wary of new people or situations. It’s very important to get these dogs out as much as possible, expose them to new things, and create positive associations with the world. They can easily become reactive. They are a primitive breed designed to work independently from humans, so they will trust their own instincts over yours. They are not “stubborn,” but they require a deeper level of trust, respect, and incentive in training. If it doesn’t benefit them, they aren’t likely to abide by anything you have to say. Ridgebacks are very loyal, goofy, and loving dogs in the right homes, but they do require a lot of commitment and can be challenging! - I am very passionate about both breeds and only want to see them go to homes that will truly meet their needs! If anyone ever has questions about Vizslas or Ridgebacks, feel free to comment or message me. ☺️ - #highenergy #dogtraining #rhodesianridgeback #vizsla #ridgeback

Stubborn breed, he’s an alpha boy, dominance problems, no manners, needs better greetings, but my type of dog lol. These kinks are easy to work out if you know what/how to do it.
