Purely a vacation, this was a trip of experiences: hiking with friends for six days high in Italy’s Alps, exploring the Venetian Lagoon, pounding pesto, sipping wine on Italy’s Riviera, and capping it all off on Lake Como, where he was named “Ambassador to the World” by the mayor of Varenna. For over 50 years, Rick’s been empowering Americans to travel through his television shows, guidebooks, tours, and more — celebrating cultures, broadening our perspectives, and creating life-changing travel memories for us all. Appropriately, Rick’s spending today doing what he loves most: He’s over in Europe, filming his TV show, uncovering hidden gems, and updating his guidebooks. Lengthy delay or quick, last-minute flight change? No problem—your bag is with you. You can also save money by bringing less. Read the fine print when you are choosing flights to understand add-on fees for checked (and sometimes even carry-on) baggage. In Europe, you’ll walk with your luggage more than you think you will. Before flying to Europe, give yourself a test. Pack up completely and walk around your house or block. Or practice being a tourist in your hometown for an afternoon. Anthony Bourdain and Rick Steves have something to teach us about Iran. They never got together to give us the crossover travel show we deserved. But if you watch the episodes where each of them visits Iran, you get the sense they were aligned in some pretty important ways. I watched both episodes recently, a few days apart, after the United States and Israel started bombing Iran. It’s almost comical how different they are in the way they grab your attention. Steves looks like your IT guy. He talks like Mister Rogers. And he makes you feel like everywhere you go with him there’s nothing to be afraid of. Bourdain walks around with a forcefield. He draws you in with that gravelly voice and it’s like a promise: Relax, no one’s going to eff with us. What surprised me most is Steves uses his librarian voice to disarm people with pointed questions. What they both show is that seeing the world firsthand — if you can — asking questions and listening, that’s the best way to understanding a place, a people, you only thought you knew. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the two apart if you just read their words. Who said this line? “I’ve been wondering to what extent the US-Iran tensions might be explained by caring people on both sides motivated by love … and fear — and the flip side of fear is understanding.
