The amount of quality food they put out on the weekend is impressive, here are 3 more essentials for when you pull up: • Doubles - Must be consumed standing. We ordered ours extra spicy, it was perfect. 🌶 • Curry Goat with Dhalpuri Roti - Watch for bones, then enjoy the tender goat held between roti that has ground split peas in it. 🔥 • Pholouri - These are savory, chewy fried dough balls that are doused in tamarind. Yemen Café on Atlantic Ave is the first Yemeni 🇾🇪 restaurant in the US. I first highlighted @yemencafe Bay Ridge, Brooklyn location for a project I did with @meta @unwto and @raybanstories last year. That’s how I first met Abdulrahim, son of the founder, who blessed me with immense love. Then we included Yemen Cafe for the @righteouseats x @getyourguide tour. Again, Abdulrahim and team showered us with so much food that all the attendees walked away with a week-worth of leftovers. Before the collabs, I occasionally checked in at the OG location for the saltah, a piping stew made of vegetables, spices, and meat broth, served with a scarf-sized flat bread. While I’ve never visited Yemen or any country in the region, the concept of consuming hot food while living in heat to actually stay cool, seems relevant from Aden (or Sana’a) to Seoul. 이열치열 以熱治熱 situation, feel me? A proper @righteouseats classic highlight of Yemen Cafe is overdue. But in the meantime, peep your boy enjoying saltah, maraq, fatah, and sautéed minced lamb all with rashush. And I must say, my appreciation for cultural diversity and food from various countries stem from my upbringing in Queens. Share your suggestions in the comments 👨🏻‍💻 Remember that “Recipe for Magic” ✨ moment with Coke at my neighbor Abby’s birthday party 🎉 earlier this year? As a follow up, I decided to host a situation 🤜🏼🤛🏼 for the @righteouseats community. Not just for the viewers that show us love in the comments 🫶🏼, but to support a restaurant we helped go viral and grow in revenue 📈. So I floated the idea of hosting a dinner at @ladinastia72, a Chino-Latino staple in the Upper West Side since ‘86, to the kind folks of Coke (and their receptive agencies 😉). Thankfully, the response was beyond positive. A community celebration, anchored with Chino-Latino dishes, and tied together with ice-cold 🧊 @cocacola? True recipe for magic, word. 👏🏼 Now, putting together any function is no cakewalk, especially if you’re a bootstrapped social media channel. But on Thursday, July 27th, we crushed it—a free, all-inclusive feast for 70-plus excited souls at La Dinastia. Strangers became friends, bonding over crackling chicken, chuleta, and ropa vieja. And the restaurant stayed busy on a weekday evening. Plus, we got more content to keep the fire 🔥 burning. Major shout out to Righteous Eats community members for joining us. Much respect to the entire La Dinastia crew. They’ve been around since 07, that’s pre-Obama. There’s a reason they’ve stuck around: the tacos are amazing. 2. Tamales from @eveliastamales. You already know, we took @aoc here because these are some of our favorite tamales in NYC. 3. Chalupas from @chalupaspoblanaseltlecuile. Cleotilde has been holding it down since before Chipotle moved in on Junction. The chalupas, the comal, and the decoration are 100% Poblana. 4. Chilaquiles from @newyorktitlan in Bushwick. This hole-in-the-wall reps Ciudad de Mexico, and the chilaquiles are stewed in Chef Julio’s salsa de árbol, a recipe passed down from his mother. 5. Mole Poblano from @ollin.nyc. This dish was special. Sent straight from the motherland by the chef and owner’s mother, this mole is something you have to experience for yourself. His latest venture @rokstarchicken a Korean fried chicken takeout inside Food Bazaar in Douglaston, Queens, is inspired by his childhood spent in Kwangju, South Korea, where it’s a tradition to root for the hometown baseball team Tigers, while having fried chicken and beer. There are many Korean fried chicken eateries in the tristate, but Rokstar stands apart with its fresh-out-the-fryer chicken (using new oil, daily) and efficient Korean-style packaging. My palate and undoubtedly elevated cholesterol recommend it. Check it out when you’re in the area.
