There were two actors I became fond of that led me down the rabbit hole of watching older films: Jack Nicholson and Robert Redford. I was struck by his work on screen first, through films like The Way We Were (1973) and The Horse Whisperer (1998), before delving into his work behind the camera with Ordinary People (1980) leaving a memorable impact on me. It is Ordinary People that finally earned him an Oscar, even though he should’ve swept with All the President’s Men (1976) which I’m sure is many others’ favorite film of his as well. He went to great lengths to make sure this film was made and didn’t waver from the original true story by ensuring that everything in the film was factual. I also can’t help but mention my love of his work alongside his decades- spanning collaborator Jane Fonda in four (really five) films with one being Barefoot in the Park (1967), which I talked a little bit about on the latest episode. Like Nicholson, Redford never gave interviews so, while I have been a fan of his for years, he remains an enigma to me. I just recently found this late night talk show appearance which made my jaw drop. He and Beatty gave more interviews later in their career, unlike Nicholson. While I always hope he’ll return to the screen one day, I am grateful one of American cinema’s best is still with us 💖🎉.
