A remarkable story, but is it true? Before his rise to fame, Robert was a terrible guitarist. Often chased off stage. Other well known musicians would recall these events and dismissed him as a hack. In one year, Robert would return and display an incredible improvement. Outplaying those well known musicians. This is where the legend of Robert selling his soul would come from. But was it just intense practice and honing his craft and skill, or are those legends real. You decide. From The Strangest on TT “Deal with the Devil - Amencan blues musician Robert Johnson was said to have sold his soul to the devil. The story is that he went to the crossroads near a plantation at midnignt and met the devil, who took his guitar, tuned it, played a few songs, and handed the guitar back, granting him mastery of the instrument.“ #robertjohnson #dealwiththedevil #wasitreal #unexplained #downtherabbithole

Follow (me) @epicliveperformances to tune into the most iconic moments in live music history …. B.B. King repeatedly credited Clapton for introducing the blues to a massive white audience in the late 1960s and early 1970s, especially in the U.K. and the United States. In interviews and in his autobiography Blues All Around Me, B.B. explained that before Clapton, blues musicians were largely confined to Black audiences and small clubs, while young white rock fans had little exposure to the original blues artists. Clapton’s work with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, and later Derek and the Dominos created a bridge. He openly worshipped and cited players like B.B. King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson. When Clapton became a guitar hero, his fans wanted to know where his sound came from, and that curiosity sent them back to the original bluesmen. As B.B. King put it, Clapton “made the white kids listen to the blues,” and that attention led to renewed touring opportunities, record sales, and visibility for artists like B.B. King himself.

Some songs just hold too much power. This is “Me And The Devil” by the Austrian artist Soap&Skin. It’s actually a cover of a 1930s Robert Johnson blues song, but she turned it into a terrifying, industrial masterpiece. The heavy breathing, the distorted drums, and the haunting vocals make it the ultimate anthem for anyone entering their “villain era.” It’s intense, uncomfortable, and absolutely addictive. 🎵 Me and the Devil Blues – Robert Johnson “Me and the Devil Blues” is a classic blues song recorded in 1937 by Robert Johnson. The song tells a dark, symbolic story about walking side by side with the devil, which represents inner struggles, guilt, temptation, and hardship. In blues music, the “devil” is often used as a metaphor for pain, trouble, or difficult life choices rather than something literal. The song reflects loneliness and emotional conflict, with a haunting guitar style that became very influential in rock and blues history. Over time, it became one of the most famous Delta blues songs ever recorded.

The legend of the “musician who made a deal with the devil” didn’t start with rock stars — it goes back to the Mississippi Delta. And one name always comes up: Robert Johnson. Before 1930, people said he was average at best. Then he disappeared for a while. When he came back? Different. Faster. Smoother. Almost supernatural on the guitar. The rumor spread that Johnson met a dark figure at a crossroads somewhere near Clarksdale — handed over his guitar — and in exchange, received mastery… at a cost. Coincidence? Or something older? Because here’s what fuels the comment wars: Johnson recorded songs like “Cross Road Blues” and “Me and the Devil Blues.” Lyrics about being chased. Bargains. Damnation. Then he died at just 27 years old under mysterious circumstances — likely poisoning, but never fully confirmed. And he wasn’t the last “27 Club” name people side-eye. Jimi Hendrix. Janis Joplin. Kurt Cobain. All insanely talented. All gone at 27. Skeptics: “It’s myth, addiction, and coincidence.” Believers: “Fame has a price.” But here’s the uncomfortable part — why do so many cultures have the same archetype? A gifted artist. A sudden rise. A bargain at midnight. European folklore, African spiritual traditions, American blues legends — same structure, different century. Is it metaphor? A warning about ambition? Or is the crossroads story rooted in something people were afraid to say out loud? If it’s fake, why does it refuse to die? If it’s real, why does every generation have its version? Talent… or transaction? Drop your take — folklore, or something far older than the music industry? 🎸🔥

The song is known for its minimal, dark arrangement and is built around sparse piano lines, restrained instrumentation, and intense vocal delivery. Lyrically, it draws inspiration from the traditional blues song “Me and the Devil Blues” by Robert Johnson, reinterpreting its themes through a modern, atmospheric lens. This performance was recorded live at Heldenplatz, Vienna, Austria (October 3, 2015). The live version emphasizes the song’s stark structure and emotional tension, with a stripped-down presentation that highlights the vocals and dynamics. Me and the Devil is often recognized for its haunting tone and has gained popularity through use in films, television series, and online media, helping establish Soap&Skin’s reputation for dark, cinematic music within the experimental and art-pop scene. . . We’ve got it b-b-b-b-bad for George Thorogood and the Destroyers ☠️ “I can’t play anything else!” @georgethorogoodofficial said about his signature blues rock style. “George Thorogood knows two songs, and about a hundred variations of those two songs...[I started playing blues because] I dug it. There are certain areas of it that I adapted to very quickly. John Lee Hooker[‘s] style of guitar and the slide guitar of Elmore James. And I also know a lot of Robert Johnson. John Hammond was a big influence, too. I just thought that was a natural way to go.”    Check out our George Thorogood & The Destroyers installation in our Legends exhibit to see the instruments used on “Bad To The Bone” and more! Now open on Level 5 of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“Me and the Devil” is Soap&Skin’s dark reinterpretation of a 1930 blues song originally recorded by Robert Johnson. The original was written at a time when Johnson’s music was surrounded by myths about selling his soul to the devil. Soap&Skin stripped it down to something almost unbearable — slowing it, hollowing it out, and turning the blues into a confession about guilt, shame, and self-destruction. It isn’t meant to be comfortable. It’s meant to feel like you’re overhearing a secret you weren’t supposed to hear. Eric Clapton is one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived—raw, soulful, and timeless ❤️ Born March 30, 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England, Eric Clapton grew up in a fractured family (raised by grandparents after his mother left) and found escape in the blues records of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and B.B. King. He taught himself guitar as a teen, joined The Yardbirds at 19 (replacing Eric Burdon), then Cream (1966–1968), turning blues-rock into psychedelic fire with hits like “Sunshine of Your Love” and “White Room.” After Cream disbanded, he formed Blind Faith, then Derek and the Dominos—where he wrote and recorded the masterpiece “Layla” about his unrequited love for Pattie Boyd (George Harrison’s wife). His solo career is legendary: 461 Ocean Boulevard (1974) gave us “I Shot the Sheriff,” Slowhand (1977) delivered “Cocaine” and “Wonderful Tonight,” August (1986) brought “It’s in the Way That You Use It,” and Unplugged (1992) won six Grammys with acoustic versions of “Tears in Heaven” (written after the tragic death of his 4-year-old son Conor) and “Layla.” He’s won 18 Grammys, sold over 100 million records, and is the only musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times (Yardbirds, Cream, solo). Clapton’s playing style—slow, expressive bends, sustain that feels like crying, and tone that sings—has influenced everyone from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. In 2026, he’s still active—releasing music, touring selectively, and remaining a living link to the golden age of blues and rock.
