remarkable accuracy using cheap motors for precise linear motion #diy #project #engineering #robot #3dprinting Smooth, accurate, continuous motion is difficult to get using only cheap servomotors and kinematics, so I had to implement something special. To avoid backlash in the system, I turned to Newtonian mechanics. Orientation of the motors and geometry of the linkages has positioned the center of mass behind the base, and gravity preloads all of the servomotors. Simple, straightforward, and elegant way to remove position uncertainty from cheap motors. These hobby servo motors use internal feedback control to produce smooth and repeatable motions. Each motor has its own control loop, which runs in real time on a single microcontroller. The global planner uses inverse kinematic and acceleration limits to produce a feasible trajectory, which satisfies constraints. As long as the control signals do not violate the acceleration limits, the system of motors will be very accurate. With a lot of math, some unique control algorithms, and a new mechanical design, I hope to show that even cheap servomotors can be used to create a good DIY robot arm. If you want to learn more on your own, I learned the prerequisites from chapter 13 and chapter 14 of a book called Planning Algorithms by Steven Lavelle. Ideally I will make this available as an open source ROS robotics kit for people to build and experiment with, details will be on Patreon!
