Freed from its contractual obligations with Decca Records, Rolling Stone Records made its debut with the band’s ninth studio album that soared to the number one spot on the U.S. and UK charts. With newly minted member Mick Taylor taking on lead guitar duties, the Stones turbocharged its sound on the album with shiny, rollicking rock gems like “Brown Sugar”, “Bitch”, and “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”, and “Sway”. The band didn’t forget its roots, creating blues-drenched “You Gotta Move” and “I Got The Blues” or venturing again in country-rock with “Wild Horses” and “Dead Flowers” (shown here). For this album, the Stones commissioned pop artist Andy Warhol to design the album’s Grammy-nominated cover of a man in tight jeans with a working zipper that revealed underwear fabric. The song is also popularly known by its opening lyric, ‘Jeremiah was a bullfrog’ which was never meant to be a lyric. Hoyt wrote it as a placeholder for a cartoon that never aired. He scribbled ‘Jeremiah was a bullfrog’ as a joke, planning to fix it later, but Three Dog Night recorded it before he could. The band didn’t even like the song until Chuck Negron pushed for it. It shows Elvis at his most human — vulnerable, exhausted, yet completely devoted to his art. Sitting at the piano, pouring every last piece of himself into the song, he no longer looks like the young man who changed the world in 1956… and yet, we feel every second with him. Between verses, he glances at his friend Charlie Hodge, who holds the microphone, and smiles — as if reassuring himself that he still has it, that he’s still Elvis, that as long as the music plays, everything will be okay. And in the end, determined to prove he was still the King of Rock and Roll, he pushes through the song on his own — without relying on backing vocals to carry him through the hardest parts.
