ROGUE WAVES 🌊⛵️⛈️ After a full lifetime on the water I’ve been lucky enough to watch and learn about many different kids of waves, some friendlier than others 😂 So what causes rogue waves? Well they need one of three things to occur: 1. Marine topography where the depth changes rapidly from deep to shallow- prime examples are the Grand Banks off Newfoundland (The Perfect Storm), or Saba Bank in the Carribean. 🌊 2. Areas where conflicting currents meet. Like around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa where the Alguhas and Benguela current run into each other head on. It’s a clashing of the Indian and south Atlantic oceans and this can lead to some pretty severe weather patterns and steep waves! 🌏 3. Subsea Anomolies like active volcanic seamounts (Orca seamount), earthquakes or even glacial calving🌋! Where more than one of these features come together, you have a very high risk for rogue waves. The pinnacle of this is Cap Horn, the Mount Everest for Sailors, located off the southern tip of South America at 56° S, it has all three characteristics! And it’s a place to be respected 🙏 So how to sailors survive encounters with rogue waves?
