Do a Barrel Roll is a catchphrase urging someone to perform a 360-degree horizontal spin, originating from the 1997 N64 video game Star Fox 64. The phrase is often used in image macros where the subject appears to be in mid-rotation or in GIFs showing a full rotation. It is also commonly used online as a standalone catchphrase in replies or comments to relevant videos, GIFs, and images.
The barrel roll maneuver has been an aerial combat technique since World War I. It was later included in the 1993 Super Nintendo game Star Fox. In the game, players could perform a barrel roll by double-tapping the L and R buttons to deflect enemy lasers. The specific phrase „do a barrel roll“ comes from the sequel Star Fox 64, released on June 30th, 1997. In this game, the character Peppy Hare instructs the player to „do a barrel roll!“ while approaching enemy turrets. On June 4th, 2007, YouTuber DeusExBenigma uploaded the earliest known video of this scene, receiving over 5.9 million views in roughly 17 years.
The first Urban Dictionary definition was created on January 30th, 2004, defining the term as pressing a Z or R button twice in Star Fox to perform a barrel roll, temporarily shielding the ship from lasers. The phrase was used in prank calls during the Tom Green raids of 2006 and was often quoted on the image board 4chan. A Facebook fan page for the catchphrase accumulated over 14,700 likes, and there are 218 YTMND submissions as of November 3rd, 2011.
In the late 2000s, the phrase became an image macro fad on the site I Can Haz Cheezburger, where users added it to images depicting things performing rolls. On November 3rd, 2011, Google added an Easter egg for the search query „do a barrel roll“ that would rotate the entire screen 360 degrees. This trick was covered by Kotaku, The Huffington Post, and Tech Crunch.
On April 13th, 2020, Rick May, the voice actor behind Peppy Hare, passed away after contracting the coronavirus. His death led to widespread appreciation and references to Peppy’s catchphrase across the internet. May also voiced Team Fortress 2’s Soldier character, which was paid tribute in a widely shared video of players honoring him.
