In 2005, the famous slippers were stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in the late actress’s hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota. For years their disappearance puzzled film historians, collectors and fans of the classic movie. The truth behind the theft turned out to be almost unbelievable. The man responsible, Terry Martin, had never even seen The Wizard of Oz. When he broke into the museum on August 27, 2005, he believed the slippers were decorated with real rubies and thought he could remove the gems and sell them on the black market. The shoes were insured for $1 million, which convinced him that the stones must be genuine. But when he later approached someone who dealt in stolen jewels, he learned the truth — the famous sparkling “rubies” were actually made of glass, created as costume pieces for the iconic film. The slippers remained missing for years until the FBI recovered them in 2018, when another individual attempted to claim a reward connected to the case. Nearly two decades after the theft, Martin was finally charged. Now 76 years old, he avoided prison and was instead sentenced in U.S. District Court in Duluth, Minnesota, to one year of supervised release, bringing a strange and fascinating chapter of Hollywood history to an end.
