ZKMigratory birds are trapped to be eaten as a traditional delicacy in Cyprus known as “Ambelopoulia” (grilled, pickled or boiled songbirds). It is completely illegal by european law yet poachers are still out every night and every morning during the peak migration seasons, creating a business from these birds. (Autumn)
It’s sickening, and im still in shock every time i see defenceless birds caught in these traps.
To volunteer alongside the most dedicated activists i have met fighting issues like this, gives hope for the future.
Poaching has reduced massively over the years thanks to @cabs_reports, but it is still happening & support is always needed to keep field investigations open.

*All nets are dismantled and taken down with authorities once the birds have been rescued

FOMoving Day(s) is finally here! Our placement center birds have officially moved into our brand new facility and they’re loving it! This was a relatively low-impact move for these birds. The space is larger and brighter, with new enrichment to explore, but it’s similar to their previous room.
Moving the remainder of the sanctuary birds into their new aviaries will be a massive undertaking, but one that’s so necessary and that we’ve been looking forward to for five challenging years. This was a huge, exciting step in our new chapter! 🎉💕

BILet’s face it, we aren’t perfect and neither is the way we care for our birds. But we DO OUR BEST and that’s what matters. We may be saving up for that outdoor aviary, or that extra cage so that our bird can get some natural sunlight in its every day… and perhaps the day got away from us before getting to every single cage every single day… and perhaps we hosted that family get together that messed up the bird’s nighttime routine…
Life happens and sometimes we fall short of what we wish we could do. What matters is that we show up and keep our birds happy and healthy in our care. But that starts with YOU being happy and healthy, too, and if you aren’t taking care of you first, then how can you be expected to be able to care for anyone (or anything) else?
Make sure to make YOU time so that you can care and love them. And don’t compare yourself to others (we are ALL guilty of this!) it will only bring you down. Find your people that lift you up and inspire you to do better by yourself and your birds. I’ve made it a goal to change one thing every year to better the way I care and provide for my birds. It doesn’t even have to be big! It can be changing your feeding containers or system, it can be changing the way you store your bird’s food or buying an extra scale so you don’t forget it on road trips… start small.
And when it comes to wing clipping, don’t do it for your own convenience. Birds are unique because of their ability to fly and if you aren’t willing to accept a flighted animal in your home, don’t get a bird. You will be amazed at how much better of a trainer you will become working with a bird who can get away from you rather than one who can’t. And if you must clip for medical reasons, make sure it’s done in an ethical way - never clip JUST one wing, and never trim so short the bird falls like a rock.
