16 February 2026, leaders across SA’s Cultural, Creative & Sports Industries (CCI&S) gathered to reflect on where the sector has been and where it’s going. The study, grounded in official national statistics and internationally recognised frameworks, validates what many governments have long known the creative sector is essential to our economy and not just a fringe industry. Mapping Study highlighted: • The CCS&I employs 1.4 million SA's translating to 7.2% of the country’s employment • The sector has a youthful workforce with majority aged 25–39 • One of the most inclusive labour markets, with higher participation of women and young people • The sector displays an impressive growth on enterprise ownership from 37 114 in 2015 to 95 631 in 2022 • The sector plays a critical role in reducing poverty and so much more The launch was expertly moderated by MC @luphumlongcayisa. Ms @tefelomajoro delivered and presented the Capstone Report, and later joined the panel discussion alongside Sifiso Skenjana, with Dr @karabo_maiyane joining virtually. The conversation touched on: • The rise of young Black creatives entering the sector through AI, content creation, podcasting, and influencer economies • The need to distinguish between AI as a tool and “AI makers.” AI does not replace creativity it enhances it • The call for a regulatory sandbox, where stakeholders collaborate to navigate technological and industry shifts • The responsibility to properly price and value our indigenous knowledge • The importance of giving policymakers, practitioners, and industry players a shared language through data The panellists highlighted that “Let’s not fear the sector’s complexities let’s embrace them and empower the sector.” The sector is broad, and not every domain works equally across all provinces. Strategy must be context specific. As reflected: Data is not neutral. It tells stories about people, opportunity, and access. The numbers show progress but also where inclusion must deepen. Manare Sara Legodi reached out to Soaring Into the Community for design support. She is the founder and current Project Manager of Mmuso Foundation NPO, based in Boksburg. While working at a local clinic, Manare witnessed serious challenges affecting her community, an experience that inspired her to take action and create lasting change. Through Mmuso Foundation, she is dedicated to empowering women and youth, providing the skills, resources, and support needed to start and grow their own small businesses. One of the foundation’s most inspiring initiatives is its agricultural project, which transformed a former dumping site into a thriving farming space, creating opportunity, purpose, and renewal where there was once neglect. Operating since 2023, Mmuso Foundation’s mission is to help eradicate gender-based violence and poverty through impactful community-driven projects. So far, the organisation has established two offices offering support services, runs a soup kitchen, hosts fundraising events, and leads anti-bullying and “Talk to Boys” programmes in local schools. We got an opportunity to dive into the inspiring story of Majakathata’s inception and making positive impact in their community. Majakathata’s Chairperson, Tlabo Makhuitja got to share how the group was formed back in 2016 as they used to have social gatherings just to catch and have fun as friends which then later become what we now call Majakathata Social Scheme. Majakathata Social Scheme was founded with a vision to uplift those in need. We are driven by a passionate group committed to fostering a supportive community culture. We were also privileged to have been granted an opportunity to profile Majakathata Social Scheme on their 10th Year Anniversary which was on the 6th of February 2026 as they were celebrating their day by handing out school shoes to the underprivileged learners at Winnie Mandela Primary School.
