BAWing Clipping the Queen – Why, When, and How? 🐝

In this reel we show a beekeeping technique sometimes used for swarm control – clipping one of the queen’s wings. While not every beekeeper uses it, in certain conditions it can be a very practical solution.
Why clip a queen’s wing?
When a colony swarms, the old queen normally flies away with up to half the worker bees — often 10,000–20,000 bees. If her wing is clipped, she cannot fly far and usually drops in front of the hive. The swarm clusters briefly but then returns, keeping the colony together. This gives the beekeeper time to manage the swarming instinct through splitting or other methods.
Why is this important?
Swarming is a natural process, but survival in the wild is low. Studies from Europe and North America show that only about 20–25% of feral swarms survive their first winter without beekeeper support. In other words, 3 out of 4 swarms die. Clipping helps prevent bees from being lost to poor survival chances, while allowing the beekeeper to keep colonies strong and healthy.
Does the queen feel pain?
No. Honey bee wings have no nerves. Clipping does not hurt her, she continues laying normally, and the colony accepts her without issues.
How it’s done
With a marking cage and small scissors, about 30–50% of one forewing is trimmed. The process is quick, safe, and harmless when performed correctly.
