We fall asleep under more stars than you knew existed and wake up to loons calling across the water before the sun is even fully up. There is nowhere else like it in the world. And right now, as I am posting this, it is under threat. A vote on HJ RES 140 is happening TODAY at 10am CT. If it passes, it overturns the federal mining ban protecting the Boundary Waters and opens the door to toxic copper mining along the waterways that flow directly into it. I need you to stop scrolling right now and make one phone call. Five minutes. That is all this takes. 👉 Call your senators and tell them to vote NO on HJ RES 140. 👉 Use @5calls to find your reps, search BWCA, and use their sample script. 👉 If you get voicemail, leave your full street address so your call is counted. This would open up the potential for sulfide ore copper mining, which would cause irreversible damage to the entire ecosystem and water quality. Today Interior Secretary Deb Haaland signed a Public Land Order (PLO) protecting the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW or Wilderness), Voyageurs National Park (VNP), and 1854 Treaty Area from sulfide-ore copper mining. The PLO, called a mineral withdrawal, bans toxic mining on 225,504 acres of Superior National Forest land in the watershed of the BWCAW and upstream of the Wilderness. The PLO comes after the Forest Service published a comprehensive scientific review finding that sulfide-ore copper mining would pollute the Boundary Waters in ways that could not be fixed or mitigated. The PLO and the final Environmental Assessment (EA) are expected to be released tomorrow. Dining al fresco 🤌🌲 with these BWCA sunset views while devouring Lake Trout Bulgogi Bowls. 🤤Hunger is the best seasoning of all — isn’t it? The second best seasoning is my go-to bulgogi marinade which makes this trout bowl extra delightful after a long day of paddling & portaging to get to our favorite campsite. This laker is about as fresh as it gets. 🏕 The ingredients can be changed up depending on what veggies you want to portage in, but it’s basically this: - 1 lake trout (which can easily feed all of your friends & fam at camp but this recipe is for two extremely hungry campers 😆) - 2 mini avocados 🥑 - 1 handful of green beans - 1 mini seedless cucumber 🥒 - 1 boil-in-bag rice Marinade (pre-mix for camping): - 2 Tb brown sugar - 1 Tb cooking wine 🍶 - 5 Tb soy sauce - 2 Tb sesame oil - 1 Tb minced garlic 🧄 - 1 tsp ground ginger - 1 tsp black pepper - 1 Tb sesame seeds - 1 Tb maple syrup 🍁 (optional) Bake your lake trout in tin foil by placing it in the hot coals of your campfire. You’ll know that it’s done when you can literally take the meat off the bones (15-20 min). The key is to then brown & caramelize your boneless fillets in a pan. So good! Put your bowl together in layers: cooked rice, cooked veggies, raw veggies & trout with a little extra drizzle of the ooey gooey marinade from the pan. I’ve made this recipe at home, while RV camping & canoe camping. It’s pretty versatile! Enjoy! 🧡 Song: Radio Up, Paper Planes
