DRFlea Allergy Dermatitis often presents as:
- Hair loss at the base of the tail and on the back legs
- Flakiness of the skin
- Crusting and redness of the skin
- Itch level is extremely high
Sometimes you see fleas… we did with this dog, but many times, especially in cats, there are no fleas seen.
Treatment:
1) Flea prevention for affected pet and ALL other dogs and cats in the household.
2) Vacuum, wash bedding, and clean household.
3) Antibiotics if infection is present from skin trauma…
Do a cytology!
4) Medicated shampoo for irritation & infection.
5) +/- Steroids for the itchiness
How long is the flea life cycle? That’s how long I make sure to recommend flea prevention for the household. Obviously in Texas, year round prevention is ideal!

GOHard to tell at first glance, but lurking beneath this thick coat is a bacterial skin infection.
These circular areas of alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and crusting are consistent with superficial bacterial folliculitis. Bacterial infections like this are secondary lesions — they develop because of an underlying issue that compromises the skin barrier or immune function.
While systemic antibiotics and antibacterial shampoos are effective for initial resolution, recurrence is common if the primary cause isn’t identified and addressed.
This patient is an 11-year-old spayed female Norwegian Elkhound presenting with these lesions and minimal pruritus. Laboratory results revealed an elevated ALP, which, in an older patient with this dermatologic pattern, raises suspicion for hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease). Further diagnostic work-up is warranted to confirm and manage the underlying endocrinopathy.
