The scapegoat becomes the empath.

Praised for traits the parent values.
Used to reflect the parent’s image.
Expected to be “better.”
But here’s what that creates…
They suppress vulnerability.
Become perfectionistic.
Fear failure deeply.
And slowly disconnect from their true self.
Long-term…
The empath keeps trying to “fix” relationships.
Overgives.
Sacrifices.
And often attracts narcissistic partners.
The golden child may look confident…
but hides deep insecurity.
Struggles with empathy.
And finds it hard to connect authentically.
Here’s what I want you to know:
These are patterns I’ve seen in so many families.
But they are not your identity.
These roles were survival strategies…
not who you truly are.
And healing begins
when you start questioning the role
you were forced to play.

DODid you know that in many narcissistic family systems, siblings are often assigned opposite roles?
One is blamed.
One is idealized.
One becomes the scapegoat.
The other becomes the golden child.
From the outside, these roles can look very different.
But beneath them, both are adaptations to the same dysfunctional system.
The scapegoat often learns to become hyperaware of everyone else’s emotions.
They become intuitive, compassionate, and deeply attuned... but may also struggle with anxiety, people-pleasing, and boundaries.
The golden child often learns that love must be earned.
They may excel, achieve, and appear confident, while quietly battling perfectionism, fear of failure, and a disconnection from their authentic self.
I know these dynamics intimately.
And what I have learned, both personally and through years of guiding others, is this:
These roles are not identities.
They are survival strategies.
They were created in response to an environment that required adaptation.
But what helped you survive then may now be limiting your ability to fully live.
Healing begins when you recognize the role you were assigned without allowing it to define you.
It deepens when you release the beliefs that came with that role:
That you are too much.
That you are not enough.
That your worth must be earned.
That love requires self-abandonment.
This is the work of reclamation.
It is the process of returning to the self that existed before the family system told you who you had to be.
And for many, that journey is accelerated through deep healing practices, whether through guided support, sacred plant medicine, or transformational identity work.
You are not the scapegoat.
You are not the golden child.
You are who remains when the role is finally released.
