Start with a simple core idea A 30-second commercial doesn’t need too many ideas. Focus on one clear concept and one main subject so the audience can quickly understand your intention. 3. Prepare as much as possible in pre-production The more complete your vision is before the shoot, the more control you’ll have during production and post. Storyboards, motion boards, location scouting, and detailed discussions with your DP all matter. 4. Editing your own first cut This doesn’t mean replacing editors. But understanding editing and having a clear sense of rhythm and pacing will make you a stronger director. 5. Understand the clients objective The most important thing is understanding the core objective of the project.
