You literally sit on the floor and “scratch” through thousands of polished gemstones to fill a bag or cup with your favourites - it’s oddly calming and super fun (yes, even as an adult 😂). I walked away with some gorgeous Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, and a few surprise finds I didn’t expect!
Prices start from just R35, and they have a cool Cave Golf setup too. Great for kids, families, or just a random little adventure if you’re in the area. They’re open every day — even on holidays — and it’s such a feel-good outing without breaking the bank.

Any precious stone lovers out there passing through Cape Town I highly recommend a stop at the Scratch Patch 🤩
Would have got a cup full and spent all afternoon there if we had the time and suitcase space! 😆

SUAs a child, my local corner store was a place of wonder. As you walked in it had a huge wooden counter, fronted by glass, and behind it were all the little wooden boxes of sweets, all numbered and with their prices. Once you had taken seven years to decided on just the right combination of tour favourites, you were handed a cone of paper, sweets tucked inside.
Later on I’d see haberdashery counters, apothecary stores and similar displays, with all the little things neatly in their spaces, and I found it so appealing. I had my own little Printers Tray mounted on the wall above my bed, with my precious bits and bobs proudly displayed- found feathers, a thimble from granny, a precious Tigers Eye stone scrabbled from The Scratch Patch….
This lovely unit is an adult version of my Printers tray.. a bit more curated, but with no less treasured items in it- a growing seed collection from my garden. I expect it will have many looks over the seasons and years as my magpie tendencies get the better of me.
