_CWhen Richard Linklater began casting for Before Sunrise, he wasn’t simply looking for two actors, but for two souls capable of carrying an entire film built almost entirely on dialogue and human connection.
The choice of Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy was not immediate, but the result of a meticulous search. Linklater saw Hawke in a stage play in New York and was deeply impressed. Shortly afterward, he met Delpy in Paris, sensing in her the natural sensitivity and intelligence that could bring Céline to life.
The director then invited them both to Austin for a screen test that lasted several days. It wasn’t just about reading lines: he wanted to observe how they spoke to each other, how they listened, whether that “spark” could emerge naturally — the kind needed to make a one-night love story feel completely believable.
Once cast, Hawke and Delpy didn’t simply perform their roles. They actively collaborated with Linklater in rewriting much of the screenplay, infusing Jesse and Céline with their own personalities, fears, and perspectives on love. The result was dialogue that felt alive, authentic, and deeply human.
As Linklater himself said:
“If there hadn’t been chemistry between Ethan and Julie, the film wouldn’t have existed. Everything depended on their ability to listen to each other.”
