Jonathan Azu’s (@jonathanazu) dad and uncle had prostate cancer, so his mom insisted he take a screening test. His numbers came back elevated, and his care began at City of Hope. Today, he is an energetic father and active member of City of Hope’s MFEI volunteer group. “My goal is to share my story of early detection and encouragement and to participate in as many City of Hope events as possible,” he says. We hope you’ll join Jonathan in our 2024 Walk for Hope — the first year that City of Hope’s largest annual fundraiser to benefit cancer research will be a national event. 🩵 Tap the link in our bio for more information. #CityofHope #WalkforHope

💙it’s been 9 years…buh bye cancer… 🧿while I’ve always said “I do NOT think things happen for a reason, ONCE things happen, it’s my task to find reason within it” 💙cancer sucks, I can’t sugar coat it BUT I can remind everyone that it’s COMMON to get cancer (yes, statistically it’s true) BUT if we are: 💙PROACTIVE not PARANOID then we can FIND AND FIX MANY of them early. 💙do your screening tests (mammograms, Pap tests, colonoscopies) 🧿know your family history (and consider cancer genetic testing and stay in touch with the genetics counseling office as we discover new genes every few years) 💙know your body and your symptoms so that if you have any signs you can present to your doc EARLY and get detected. 🧿UNDERSTAND that you are NOT screened for every cancer (eg Ovarian cancer doesn’t HAVE a screening test!) 👌we can collectively do a better job at finding, fixing, preventing cancer —Cancer is survivable when found EARLY! . . #letswomantogether #obgyn #womenshealthmatters #ovariancancerawareness #ovariancancer #gyncancer

💙it’s my 8th ovarian cancer-versary—and while you may notice I look tired as I sit at the hospital finishing a long week on call I am feeling JUST PLAIN SUPER LUCKY to be here. Like here, on this earth. 💙8 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 2 ovarian cancer—and after big surgeries and complication and chemo I learned MANY nuggets that I’ve imparted here through the years BUT today’s are BASIC AND CLINICAL: ☑️understand THAT you are NOT “screened” for ovarian cancer bc there is NO screening test (yet)—the PAP smear looks for CERVICAL CANCER! ☑️KNOW your family history—while this may only contribute to 10-15% of ALL cancer (meaning of all the people with cancer only 10-15% have a risk that was inherited—though that number seems to continue to grow as we learn more about our genetics) but KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY of ALL cancers (not “just” ovarian and not “just” on moms side). This is because we know that certain other cancers have a higher association with ovarian and then you can be watched more proactively. ☑️LEARN the symptoms and WHY being “ proactive not paranoid“ is the only way you as the patient and we as the doctors will find this early… If you have bloating or pain or pressure for more than two weeks then please call your clinician and tell them that you need a pelvic ultrasound… Is this a perfect test? No… But as of right now, this is the way for us to pick up Ovarian Cancer early so that we do not need to quote the statistics 2/3 of ovarian cancer. Patients are diagnosed at stages three and four treatment is far more difficult and survival is less likely. 🧿 all cancer suck… Ovarian Cancer certainly tops the list… I won’t ever “thank God” for my survival because that would somehow imply that he chose me over someone else and more worthy to be here… I believe and feel grateful for millions of things, but in this regard, we need to understand our bodies, understand our system, and understand how and where we can intervene… . . #letswomantogether #knowyourbody #knowyoursymptoms #ovariancancer #ovariancancersurvivor #ovariancancerawareness #ovariancancersucks #doctorswithcancer #gyncancer #obgyn #doctormom

Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 years of age are invited to have a Cervical Screening Test every 5 years through their healthcare provider. All cervical screening participants now have the choice to self-collect their own Cervical Screening Test sample. A self-collected sample is taken from the vagina and is checked for human papillomavirus (HPV) – a common infection that causes almost all cervical cancers.

Look at this pink spot on this back. This spot is: ✅ small ✅ pink ✅ and looks like nothing significant This is a pink melanoma, classified as amelanotic (meaning it lacks pigment). But, without a dermatoscope, this could have been missed, and why skin cancer screening has to improve. Our current skin cancer screen standards are closer to what colon cancer screening was prior to colonoscopies. Waiting for an issue to develop is not the objective of a screening test, which is what a skin exam is. If all colon cancer was found as just a polyp, no one would die from it. Same with melanoma- if we find melanoma as soon as it starts, we can better determine the outcome. Pay attention to pink and pigmented spots on your skin. If something is new, or changing, get it checked with a dermatoscope by your dermatologist. And follow me to learn what skin cancer actually looks like, and why your skin exam needs an update. #melanoma #cancerscreening #cancerprevention #coloncancer #skincancer

The battle with a total volume of repetitions or miles and their speed and pace is nothing new to people preparing for military fitness tests and follow-on training. While building up the total volume of various exercises is great, you must add a faster pace and greater muscle stamina per set to take your foundation base training to the next level. Here is a question from a military recruit working hard to improve push-up scores to be more competitive on the Navy Diving Physical Screening Test (PST)...⁣ ⁣ ➡Read the full article linked in our bio

Dr. Amanda Thorson shares the importance of the pap smear in protecting against cervical cancer. "A pap smear is a screening test for cervical cancer. It is the best thing that you can do outside of an HPV vaccine to catch early abnormal changes in your cells that could ultimately lead to cervical cancer," says Dr. Thorson. Prison can be especially difficult to navigate for autistic people and people with similar disabilities, due to loud, unpredictable noises, bright lights, unpleasant odors, complicated social dynamics and bureaucracy. The proportion of people with developmental disabilities behind bars is likely to be higher than in the general population, research suggests. 🔗 Learn more at the link in our bio. ✍️: Chiara Eisner (2020) & 🎥: Chris Vazquez (2024) / The Marshall Project #autism #disability #autismawareness #disabilityawareness Transcript: CHRIS VAZQUEZ: What’s it like to have a developmental disability in prison? Well, first, these disabilities can often go unidentified. When that happens, affected incarcerated people might not get help understanding prison rules or getting medications. These are a few services that people are entitled to under a federal law called the Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA. Advocates have long said correctional institutions don’t fulfill the ADA, making people with disabilities more vulnerable to issues like abuse and bullying behind bars. And experts say incarcerated people of color are disproportionately affected, since they’re less likely than White prisoners to be diagnosed before entering prison. In 2020, The Marshall Project sent questions to all state corrections departments in the U.S. about how they screen people for these conditions. Half said they used protocols that don’t meet professional standards, according to several experts. Like, 8 states said they used the Test of Adult Basic Education, which experts said isn’t designed to identify developmental disabilities. Five states said at the time that they don’t use a screening test at all. So how can all this actually play out? When Drew Harrison was overwhelmed by the smells and sounds of prison, he asked to stay out longer in the prison yard. He said he was told he was being insubordinate and was placed in restrictive housing. His mother said she doesn’t know how someone with autism could survive prison without an advocate.
