Some of these film jobs were paid some of these were non paid, many of these I repeated and many I had to learn on the job. If you want to make films, start showing up and learning how to do it. It pays dividends when you do eventually get where you want to be because you’ll know how everything works. #screenwriting #filmmaking #screenwriter #indiefilm #entertainmentindustry

PART 2 – GETTING MY FEATURE FILM MADE IN 2026 🎬 “Write what you know.” I’ve heard that advice for years. And honestly? I don’t think I was really doing it. I’ve worked on a lot of different projects. I’ve written different genres. I’ve tried on different tones, different worlds, different voices. But this time feels different. Instead of asking, “What could work?” I’m asking, “What do I actually need to say right now?” Not what sounds smart. Not what feels marketable. Not what fits a trend. "Write what you know", I am finally trying to understand what that is. #GettingMyFeatureMade #movie #screenwriting #filmmakingjourney #director

I hear writers say all the time that their script is a five million dollar movie. Or a twenty million dollar movie. I used to think that way too. It feels good to put a number on it. Makes it sound concrete. The truth is a script doesn’t actually have a budget until someone who knows how to break it down does the work. A producer. A line producer. A first AD. Someone who can go page by page and account for above the line and below the line costs. Cast. Locations. Crew. Equipment. Post. Insurance. Contingency. All of it. Until that happens, any number attached to the script is just an estimate based on vibe. A good producer can also give you a far more accurate range and help classify the project. Is this truly an indie. Is it a mid range play. Is it structured like a studio project. That distinction matters because it shapes who you pitch, how you package it, and what expectations come with it. I can write something that feels small emotionally but requires five countries, period costumes, and night shoots. That’s not a low budget film no matter how intimate the dialogue is. On the other hand, a contained thriller set in one location with a tight cast might look intense on the page and still be financially manageable. Budget isn’t about how big the idea feels. It’s about logistics. It’s about how many moving parts it takes to execute what’s written. As writers, I think it’s smart to be budget aware. Not to limit creativity, but to understand the implications of what we’re putting on the page. If we’re calling something contained, is it actually contained. If we’re calling it indie, does it truly read that way when broken down. Throwing out a number without analyzing the real costs isn’t budgeting. It’s guessing. So when you describe your script’s budget, are you speaking from a real breakdown or just from instinct?

I still remember finishing my first screenplay and thinking: …cool. Now what? 😅 So I did what every writer should do, I googled. That’s when I discovered script editors… and realised: ohhh, this is the missing step. Because finishing a draft isn’t the finish line. It’s the moment you need fresh eyes, someone who can tell you what’s working, what’s confusing, and what to tackle first without taking your soul out of it. Fast forward: 20 years in filmmaking (writing, directing, developing projects), I’m now opening up a limited number of slots for script feedback + notes on features and pilots. What you’ll get from me: • clear, practical notes you can actually use • character + structure focus If you want my rates + what’s included, DM me “NOTES” and tell me what you’re writing.
