KAThis was a prompt from last month’s Sketching 101 Training.
To fill a small rectangle, similar to a claw clip size, vertically, with scrollwork.
The first clip is the work of an amateur. It has no body, no movement and is worked from one slightly curved line.
I proceed to show how to add body and movement even into a small space like this through an 8 minute video. As well as personally critiquing students sketches of the prompt attempt throughout the day as they send them in.

WOThis recent custom project is breathtaking. My journey continues to take me deeper and deeper into scrollwork. In my studies I’ve found lots of inspiration from older art periods. Types of work that once would have been the prominent normal. Still seen often enough today. But forever timeless in its beauty.
As with all of my work, this ring was entirely made by hand. From the fabrication, to the setting and engraving. Featuring a brilliant 1ct pear paired with diamonds. The yellow tinge in the diamond set in rich 18kt yellow gold gives it a vibrant yellow appearance in filtered day light. I then did some deep relief sculpted scrolls going around the band. The background removed is ridiculously deep. Instead of stippling I went with a beaded background, almost as tedious as the scrolls itself. But gives an incredible contrast between the lightly hammered finish of the chased scrolls.
Here’s a little copy paste from the internet describing what the baroque period jewelry demonstrated a lot of.
Jewelry from the Baroque period (late 1500s–early 1700s) was defined by bold, sculptural gold work and a clear sense of movement. Instead of flat or delicate designs, pieces were built with deep relief, heavy scrollwork, and strong contrast, often drawing from acanthus leaves, ribbons, and architectural ornament. The goal wasn’t restraint—it was impact. Every curve and surface was designed to catch light and create shadow, giving the piece a sense of depth and life in the hand.
