This is going to sound weird, but stick with me: Whenever I pick something up in a charity shop, I ask myself one thing: 👉 “Would I still want this if it was £30?” Because here’s the trap: When something’s only £3, you start justifying it. It’s “not that bad.” It “might come in handy.” It’s “worth a try for that price.” But if you wouldn’t want it at full price, do you really want it at all? 😬 Since I started using what I call the £3 rule, I’ve stopped bringing home filler. No more “meh” jumpers. No more mugs I don’t need. No more random dresses that don’t feel like me. I’m not saying skip that section—some of my favorite finds are from there—but after digging into some safety flags from the FDA and CDC, I’m being a lot more selective about what touches my food. ​Here is what I’m looking out for: *​Vintage Tupperware & Plastics: I don't personally shop for plastics, but if you do, be careful. Pre-2010 pieces often contain BPA, and once they’re scratched or cloudy, they’re prone to shedding microplastics. *​Unlined copper: If it doesn't have a stainless steel or a lining, it can react with acidic foods like tomatoes or citrus. No lining, no food. *​Vintage painted tins: If they’re pre-1980s, that paint likely contains lead. I keep these for decor only. *​Crystal: Most vintage crystal contains lead. Stunning for a shelf, but I’ve moved away from drinking out of it daily. 🫣​And don't even get me started on vintage china and those gold-rimmed place settings—that’s a whole other rabbit hole I’m saving for a separate post. ​Did any of these surprise you?
