Saturday is a big day! I’d call it a work day but teaching you all how to grow food feels like the furthest thing from work! Here’s your itinerary for tomorrow if you need one. 9am: Free Spring seminar at Hutto’s. Don’t forget to leave some room in your car for some bags of planting mix to top off your beds or some early cool-weather seedlings! 11am: Take a stroll through the Madison Botanic Garden! It’s at the Montgomery Estate just across from First Baptist Madison on Main Street. Not enough people know about this gem! 12:30-2: Annual Indoor Seed Starting Class in Ridgeland. I have ONE spot left and I have to know by 10pm tonight in order to bring enough supplies! DM me if you want the last spot! $99 includes materials. We’re excited to share @bootstrapfarmer seed trays and accessories with you! It’s “growing” to be fun! You see what I did there?? 🤣🤣🫣 Comment below if you’ll be at Hutto’s tomorrow and please come up and say hi after the seminar! I’ll be sticking around to answer questions! @huttoshomeandgarden

I’m trying to use that my older seeds before I dive into my bigger bulk packages that I’m using for my classes. I had tested germination on these sunflower seeds from 2021 which worked well in a paper towel, but not to actually grow beyond the seed sprouting. Some seeds are viable, but they don’t have enough energy/vitality left to get beyond sprouting out of the shell. You’ll be happy to know that I do have a fresh supply of all sorts of microgreen seeds that I’ll be bringing to my workshops starting this Friday at the new Durham Public library! #theediblegardencoach #newdurhampubliclibrary #altonnh #newdurhamnh

Seed-starting season is officially here in Nashville 🌱 (Zone 7 gardeners, this is our moment!) If you’re itching to grow, here’s what you can do right now: ✨ Direct sow these outdoors: peas, spinach, arugula, radishes, carrots, beets, turnips, kale, mustard greens, cilantro, dill, and parsley. These cool-season crops love chilly soil and actually grow better before real spring warmth hits. 🌡 Wait on heat lovers. Tomatoes, peppers, and zinnias should still be started indoors in a few weeks so they don’t get leggy or shocked by cold nights. 💧 Water gently + consistently. Early seedlings need moisture, not soggy soil. Think “damp sponge,” not puddle. 🌿 Label everything. Trust me — all sprouts look the same at first and future you will be grateful. There’s something wildly satisfying about planting tiny seeds while it’s still cold out… it feels like you’re getting a head start on spring ✨

We are still working on starting seeds for annuals that like to grow in the warm summer months. If you saw my mid February seed starting list, you might notice it’s very similar to this one. I just start seeds as time allows so there’s not a specific day to start one crop or another. Makes things easier for me! #wintersowing #seedstarting #fameflowerfarm

It’s March… time to get serious about starting seeds🌱 If you garden in Minnesota (Zone 4), this is the window. Right now I’m starting: • Onions • Leeks • Celery • Broccoli • Cabbage • Cauliflower • Early herbs Because our growing season is short — and if you wait until April, you’ll be behind. Summer harvest doesn’t start in June. It starts under grow lights in March. Save this so you don’t forget what to start. Are you team “already planted” or team “still thinking about it”? 👀 #zone4garden #minnesotagardening #seedstarting #midwestgarden #growyourown

Additional TIPS: -Read seed packet directions whether seeds need light to germinate or darkness, depth of soil to plant, how soon before planting out you should start seeds indoors -Don't forget to harden off plants gradually weeks before transplanting outdoors -Know what USDA Zone you are in for the last expected frost date -Some plants love a cool start (cool hardy annuals) and some prefer a warm start (warm tender annuals) -I used 4 foot shop lights from Sam's Club to start my seeds, you can invest in specific grow lights as well, but I don't find it a requirement for success -Keep soil moist! I add water to bottom of trays nearly every day to keep everything damp -Consider adding an oscillating fan to strengthen stems and provide air flow to prevent unwanted mold/bacteria/algae growth I have my seed starting station set-up in our basement and we live in Zone 5a/b, in case you are wondering. Most importantly, have fun! #seedstarting #amesiowa #amesbouquets #iowaflowers #storycountyiowa #midwestliving #floretpottingsoilrecipie
