The world of heirloom tomatoes is enormous. So many shapes, colours, quirks, and completely different DNA stories behind each one. Honestly, it almost feels like a waste to grow the same variety twice, when there’s so much beauty still waiting to be discovered. And yet… some tomatoes make you pause. Some earn their place again and again. These three did exactly that. They surprised me, fed me, and stayed in my mind long after the season ended. Seeds saved. A follow up to my tomato breeding video from a few months ago. It’s almost impossible to fit everything into such a short format so I decided to make it a series. Selection is what created practically all of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy today and can be somewhat complex. It all starts with a source of genetic diversity like a hybrid. The sexual reproduction of two distinct individuals. The more genetically distant the two parents, the more variation of traits will appear in subsequent generations. Recently the idea has been popularized in certain farming/ gardening circles that you can mix up seeds of many different varieties and grow them out together for a few years without making selections and it will spontaneously create something new and unique. I often see this done with self pollinating/inbreeding species where spontaneous cross pollination is very rare and unlikely. People commonly mislabel these “grex” or “Landrace”. In theory this is possible with readily outcrossing species like brassicas, corn, and squash but may not achieve the desired results without intervention/selection. With inbreeding crops this practice ignores the very nature of what constitutes plant breeding and improvements: a change in traits due to genetic diversity caused by sexual reproduction and genetic recombination. To breed new crops one must first understand the basic principles of how that specific plant sexually reproduces #gardening #farming #italianfood #vegetablebreeding #tomatoseason #tomatobreeding #tomato #storagetomato #storagetomatoes #longshelflifefood #longshelflifetomato #longkeepertomatoes #longshelflifetomatoes #plantbreeder #plantbreeding #stem #genetics #mendeliangenetics
