A selenium deficiency can disrupt metabolism and weaken the immune system, leading to increased sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide and the appearance of white spots on the skin. ❗If hydrogen peroxide forms white spots, or they appear after a few seconds, this indicates a potential selenium deficiency. Remember, this test isn’t a diagnostic tool but an indicator of possible selenium shortage. If you notice these spots, confirming the results with further studies is recommended. I advise all my patients to take selenium 1-2 times a year for women’s health, improved metabolism (thyroid gland), liver function, and immune system strengthening. Since it is incorporated into selenoproteins, which have an important antioxidant activity, selenium contributes to the antioxidant defense in the thyroid, by removing oxygen free radicals generated during the production of thyroid hormones. Ventura M. et al. 2017 Secondly, a subgroup of selenoproteins, deiodinases, are essential for converting an inactive T4 into its active form T3. Kohrle J, et al. 1990 Lastly, selenium can reduce thyroid antibodies. Garner R. et al. 2002 You are thinking “man I need to go buy a Selenium supplement!? WRONG! So what foods contain selenium? 🐄 Beef liver: 3oz contains 28mcg 🐟 Halibut and tuna: 3oz contain approx. 50-90mcg 🥚 Eggs: 1 eggs contains 20mcg 🧀 Cottage cheese: 1 cup contains 20mcg As you can see, this is not something that needs to be supplemented with. You need to consume five food groups to improve your thyroid health. This is for everybody and especially if you have hypothyroidism. First are foods that are rich in selenium. You get them from Brazil nuts. If you can just presoak two Brazil nuts per day and consume them, you will get almost 100 to 200 mcg of selenium. Selenium helps in improving thyroid function and also the production of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. This is a great way of keeping your thyroid health in check. Second, you need iodine in your diet. Iodine deficiency has been linked with two billion people developing thyroid problems around the world as per the WHO. You can get iodine from iodized salt. In India, we commonly use iodized salt like Tata Namak. You can also get iodine from seaweed like nori and kelp, and even strawberries are a rich source of iodine. Iodine helps in protecting your thyroid health and reducing the risk of goitrogens, which are associated with swelling and inflammation of the thyroid gland. Third, you need antioxidants. Antioxidants take care of the free radicals that are floating around in the body and affecting the thyroid gland. You can get antioxidants from berries, cherries, and strawberries. All these astringent foods are a great source of antioxidants. They help in reducing oxidative stress and improving overall immunity and health. Fourth, you need zinc in your diet. Zinc is known to improve thyroid function. The best source of zinc is pumpkin seeds. You can soak one teaspoon of pumpkin seeds overnight or chew them well in the morning with your fruits. Brazil nuts are tiny but powerful. One or two a day can support thyroid health, metabolism, skin, and hormones because they are one of the richest natural sources of selenium. But most people eat them the wrong way. Also too many which can be toxic due to the amount of selenium. 1-2 max Soaking makes them much easier to digest and helps reduce phytic acid, a natural compound in nuts known as an anti nutrient. Anti nutrients can make it harder for your body to absorb important minerals like zinc, iron, and magnesium. How to soak Brazil nuts 1. Place your Brazil nuts in a small bowl 2. Cover with filtered water (I use my structured water @mayuwater but regular filtered water works perfectly) 3. Add a small pinch of mineral salt. I use @bajagoldsaltco 4. Let them soak 4 to 8 hours 5. Drain the water 6. Cover them loosely with a towel and let them sit about 30 minutes Let them air dry for 30 to 60 minutes under a towel so the surface moisture is gone • Store them in an airtight glass container in the fridge How long they last: • In the fridge: 3 to 4 days is the sweet spot • If they start to smell sour or feel slimy, toss them Brazil nuts are very high in healthy fats, so they can spoil faster once soaked. If you want them to last longer After soaking and draining, you can dry them in the oven at very low heat: • Spread them on a tray • Bake at about 150°F / 65°C for 3 to 4 hours until completely dry Once dry again, store them in a sealed glass jar and they can last a few weeks in the fridge. Now they are softer, easier to digest, and ready to eat. I usually have one Brazil nut in the morning as part of my morning rituals. That single nut gives close to your daily selenium needs, which supports thyroid function, antioxidant defense, and healthy skin. Tiny ritual. BIG impact. Caution: More is not better. Over 300–400mcg/day from food + supplements can cause hair loss, nail brittleness, fatigue, and other symptoms.
