BILet’s talk money. We authors all know about paying an editor or two, a cover artist, ordering proof copies, and so on, but what about those things that people talk less about?
It’s not that I didn’t know these things existed, I just hadn’t connected them to my journey as a self publishing author and I certainly underestimated those costs. If you’re in the same boat as me, keep reading.
1. Formatting software. Do you have to have it? ….technically, no. Do I recommend finding a software that works well and using it to make your book look professionally done? Yes. I purchased Atticus a week or so ago and have no complaints thus far. ($150)
2. ISBNs. You will need one for every format of your book, meaning hardback, paperback, ebook, and audiobook, special editions, and anything else you can think of. You can buy a package of 10 ISBNs on Bowker for $295 as opposed to buying 1 for $125.
3. ARCs. These are Advanced Reader Copies. They’re generally sent out with a request for a review and exposure in return. You can only send out ebook ARCs if you like but I would like to send out several physical copies as well. This will run me about $75 if I use Ingram Spark for my printing (which is the plan).
4. Copies to sell at the launch party. Now, ideally, I will sell all these copies and make the money back plus a little, but the initial chunk of money can be hard to find for some people. From Ingram Spark, getting 50 copies is going to be about $350.
5. A launch party. Is it crucial to the success of your career as an author? Probably not. Is it a good idea? A lot of the authors in my life say yes. A launch party gives you the opportunity to connect with your local audience, and it gives the locals a chance to support someone from their same area. I have no idea what it will cost me yet. Between venue, decorations, merchandise, giveaway items, and anything else that comes up… sigh. The goal is to find a local coffee shop that will host me, and create an event that is beneficial to us both.

AP✍️As a small business owner especially of creative things like books, you are CONSTANTLY thinking about new ideas EVERYDAY! What you see listed for sale is only the tip of the iceberg. Underneath it are millions of other ideas or projects that did not come to fruition ever.
💡The creative work is also not restricted to a 9-5 or Monday-Friday job. In fact, quite the opposite! I often think of my best ideas on my days off from my full-time job, in the middle of the night, in the shower or first thing in the morning. In current state, I often write down book or reel ideas on my phone when I am feeding the baby. Trying to maximize any “downtime” I have these days.
💬How about you? What’s your most creative window of the day?
PS - I find in todays world being a self publishing author is synonymous with being a small business entrepreneur.

1️⃣Who is your audience? What are their pain points? For me, my audience wants to know if South Korea is a safe destination and how to travel there like a local.
2️⃣A damn good author bio. You need to show your credibility and expertise! For example, I am an English major who lived abroad in South Korea almost 6 years. I speak Korean, I traveled extensively throughout the country, and I’m not some random tourist who went on holiday for a week.
3️⃣Books ARE ALWAYS judged by the cover. You better have a freaking awesome design that captivates viewers.
4️⃣Hire that professional proof-reader. No matter how good we may be at writing, we always make mistakes. Having another eye helps you make your book better.
5️⃣KDP has an awesome pre-order feature where you can hype up your book for 3 months before it drops! Use it to maximize sales!
