Language is not just about speaking — it is a structured system of sounds, meanings, and context. Linguistics helps us understand how language works at every level: from the smallest sound (phoneme) to the way people use language in society (discourse and pragmatics). For literature students, linguistics is extremely important because it helps us analyze texts more deeply. Concepts like syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and discourse allow readers to understand how meaning is constructed in poetry, drama, fiction, and everyday communication. In this graphic, I have explained 10 important linguistic terms that every English literature student should know. These concepts are also very useful for exams like UGC NET English Literature, PhD entrance exams, and literature studies. Understanding linguistics not only improves language knowledge but also enhances the ability to interpret literary texts more critically. Let’s use colourful semantics to improve student writing ✍️ We can use colourful semantics to teach children how to build and understand sentence structures. While doing so, we can encourage them to add greater detail beyond the: who, what doing (verb) and where. This example shows us how we can encourage students to incorporate: how doing (adverb), adjectives and when. See for yourself 👇 … The bear slept in the cave in Winter. 🇬🇧 Pragmatics is the study of how "context" shapes meaning — not only "what" we say, but "how, when, and why." Let’s explore "the foundations of meaning" 👇 🗣️ Speech Acts – *Language as action.* Example: “Can you open the window?” It looks like a question, but it’s really a request. 💬 Deixis – Words that depend on context. Example: “I’ll meet you here tomorrow.” 👉 The words "I", "you", "here", "tomorrow" change meaning with the speaker. 🧩 Presupposition – What is already assumed. Example: “John stopped smoking.” It presupposes that John used to smoke. 🔗 [t.me/everyrooz](https://t.me/everyrooz) 🔗 [instagram.com/everyroozacademy](https://instagram.com/everyroozacademy) #Pragmatics #Linguistics #Pragmatics #SpeechActs #Deixis #LanguageLearning #AppliedLinguistics #Communication #Context #PolitenessTheory #DiscourseAnalysis #EnglishStudies #Sociolinguistics #EveryRoozAcademy #LearnTodayShineEveryday #LanguageEducation #Semantics #LinguisticContext
