Imagine your house is on fire. You run outside to tell someone. You’re panicked. Frantic. You need help. But everyone just tells you to “calm down”. They reufuse to listen to what you are actually saying. They are kind, gentle. They just want you to stop panicking. But you are screaming, because something is very wrong! Imagine how much more panicked and frantic you would feel if no one was meeting your urgency. If everyone was just calm. Your feelings and behaviour would escalate. That’s what happens for our children when we focus on calming them down. When we act calm and try to impose it on them. Because although there is no real “house on fire” emergency happening, when a child is having a meltdown their nervous system is in a state of perceived emergency. The child is in that heightened state of panic as if an emergency was actually occurring. When their nervous system is in this state, we need to first meet them where they are at. Not by losing our cool, but by using specific techniques to tell their nervous system that their message has been heard. They have been understood. And only then can they return to calm. If you’re scratching your head wondering what on earth is going on with your child, … you’re probably not overreacting. They might well be neurodivergent. There were many signs in my son but we had no idea, and as a result, things got a lot worse because we weren’t seeking the right type of help. He would scream about going into school - we thought it was separation anxiety and sought therapy to support with that. His hearing was all over the place and he was diagnosed with glue ear (although they could never actually find any active glue ear during his appointments). He was medicated for toileting issues for three years. His ‘skin condition’ baffled us (and the dermatologists) for years. None of this was medical. It was all related to a different way of processing the world. It took me years to start asking the right questions. I thought his huge emotional responses were behaviour related and I doubled down on discipline which lead to a breakdown in our relationship. It wasn’t behaviour. It was a neurodivergent nervous system in overwhelm. These were not temper tantrums - they were neurodivergent meltdowns. There is one sentence every masking child’s EHCP should include. . Here it is: “X presents differently in school due to masking, and their EHCP must reflect both their hidden needs and their presentation at home.” . This sentence matters because: 1. It prevents the school minimising needs. Masking hides distress, confusion, overwhelm, and unmet communication needs. This line forces the LA to consider evidence from home and professionals. . 2. It protects your child from being judged only on classroom behaviour. The law says assessments must consider the child in different contexts. If masking is not acknowledged, needs disappear on paper. . 3. It strengthens Section B. Masking means emotional regulation needs, sensory needs, and communication difficulties are often hidden. This line ensures they must be written into Section B. . 4. It forces provision in Section F to match hidden needs. If masking is noted, the LA cannot argue that your child “copes fine” without support. Provision must reflect what is needed, not what is visible. . 5. It ensures the EHCP stays child centred. Masking is a survival strategy, not a sign that needs are low. This sentence prevents the EHCP being based solely on school observations. . If your child masks, this wording protects their true profile and makes the EHCP harder to water down. . But it also means there's absolutely no filter. She doesn't conform to the social norms. And today, it was my poor Mum in the firing line. It's her birthday soon and she was doing the yearly thing of "I don't want any presents" and in true Immy style this was the response. I mean she's not wrong in what she's saying 🤣 The good thing with her brutal honesty is that when she says something lovely or sends a compliment your way you just know it's given from the heart ❤️ and well, that makes it all the more special. And it’s one of the best feelings!! Now do not get me wrong, all LAs function differantly, some don’t budge even when the law is pressed hard and complaints are filed! Some LAs want to waste time by forcing parents to tribunal! Some just genuinely do not care for anything! ✨ There is a neuroaffirming way to support emotions without scripts pressure or performance. 🧠 Emotional support is not deciding how someone should feel or giving them a label to copy. When we colour code feelings or teach the “right” face we are teaching performance not understanding. 💬 Real emotional literacy helps a person understand their own internal experience and communicate it in a way that matches how it feels to them. It has to be led by the individual not by a chart a system or an expectation. ❌ Top down approaches often fail autistic and ADHD people because they try to impose language from the outside. Neurodivergent emotions can be layered sensory nuanced or simply different from what colour charts assume. When expression is prescribed connection is lost. 🦓 I have spent years developing a theory that explains why these tools do not work for many people and a neuroaffirming tool that supports genuine communication without pressure. It creates person led dialogue and helps individuals make sense of their emotions in their own way. 🎓 I am teaching this in two workshop dates in February 2026. Because the DWP don’t just look at what your child can do, they look at what they need in terms of extra care and supervision compared to a typical child their age. Here’s how to use it 👇 1️⃣ Instead of “sometimes needs help crossing the road,” write: “Needs constant supervision outdoors due to no danger awareness.” . 2️⃣ Instead of “finds eating tricky,” write: “Requires supervision at all meals to prevent choking.” . 3️⃣ Instead of “struggles at night,” write: “Needs supervision several nights a week for safety and to manage night wakings.” The word “supervision” tells the DWP this isn’t just parenting it’s above and beyond what’s typical. . 📌 Filling DLA?
