SESun studies continue to be the foundation of every design Jesse commits to. This simple undertaking informs and influences almost every aspect of the architectural, interior design, and landscape design processes.
The first phase is actually quite simple, as we observe the sun’s position at different times of the day, much like the great architects of the 1900s did. This practice provides the information needed to determine the rough placement of outdoor amenities that could impact the interior layout due to the indoor-outdoor connection Jesse is known for creating.
This process also allows Jesse to design the floor plans with the right information at hand. From this point, he can lay out the rooms in alignment with the sun’s position during their highest average time of use. This maximizes the amount of natural light harnessed into the interior, making the space feel bright, fresh, and airy, which always enhances the quality of any space.
In later phases, we develop complex 3D models that consider a range of factors, including topography, tree canopies, summer vs. winter solstice sun conditions, and even reflections from intentionally placed pools, for example. What you see above is one of the more dramatic examples of this advanced sun study, undertaken for our Shingle Style family compound in Muskoka.
